Default Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 10W 30

I just changed the brake in Castrol GTX oil with Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and Mobil 1filter after two weeks of cam install. Now the car (smokes) at idel and then as you drive the smoke clears and does not come back. only at cold start. Is this normal with Synthetic oil?

Why are you using such a heavy weight. Your location where you live isnt extreem cold. If I were you I would use only 5w or 0w. 10 IMO is too heavy of a weight. You probably are smoking a little because of some oil laying somewhere from where you were working, that will burn off over time, so I wouldnt worry about that, but if it smokes alot after warming up then you might have bigger problems.

I don't think an oil with a 10w rating is too heavy for TX, hell Spring is almost in Houston. In northern states, I'd agree that a 0w or a 5w would be better... to go along with the block heater.

you make it sound like 10w and 5w is such a big differance! some cars here with more miles use the 10w. and there not much thicker apart but its always good to use whats recommended i still use 5w30 M1

10w30 is fine and is a recommended oil for these cars in warm climates.

Blue smoke at startup is often valve seals. Oil leaks past the seals into the cylinders when it sits and then burns off when you crank it and no more smoke til next cold start. Not uncommon.

Definitely, that's a GM thing through and through.

But likely the OPs problem has been addressed, oil leftover from recent work since he said it didn't happen again.

good info there. I currently use European German castrol 0w-30 but am thinking of trying the Mobil 1 0w-30. Too bad its gunna be awhile considering I have 18 quarts.

As for me?

Wal-mart Supertech. Unless you are road racing, just change the oil regularly and anything with a API approval is just fine.
