Default This sucks. Is this normal?

After registering it today, I finally can drive my camaro around places. I put in a half a tank today (maybe a tad bit less), drove about 36 miles (according to mapquest) and im down to a quarter tank. Its some city driving, but its mainly all freeway driving. Is this normal? I knew gas was going to be bad, but I thought I would get better than 40 miles per quarter tank? Any suggestions to get the most mileage out of my camaro?

judging from the description of the car.....sure its normal for a big block to get that mileage

year, engine, drivetrain, mods

and realize that the 1/2 mark on the guage is not accurate.

on the highway i generally get 50-75miles before the needle reaches the FULL mark, then 100 miles from F-3/4, and again from 3/4-1/2, then about 75 miles from 1/2-1/4, and about 50 mile from 1/4-near E.

I got 300 miles on a full tank on the highway on monday. And that was mainly doing 75-100 mph the whole tank. Granted I recently gave it a full tune-up including (but not limited to) iridium plugs, magnecor wires, front and rear oxygen sensors, fuel filter, Gumout injector cleaning system, and premium gas only. Also, depending on the year of your car, they changed the size of the gas tank from like 12 to 16 gallons roughly. It's listed under the
" car specs" thread in the stickys on this forum. Hope this helps. l8r

Sorry, I should have listed that under the original past. But its a 2002 6 speed z28. The only mods that have been done to it are a flow master muffler, k & n air filter, and some after market rims/tires.

The thing I dont understand is, I would read user reviews about the 2000-2002 z28 camaro and around 80% of people would list it has good gas mileage. Some even say it gets better than some 4 cylinder cars. What could be some issues to why I am getting close to 10 miles per gallon?

So I would need to give my car a full tune up to get those kinds of numbers? When I was getting my smog done yesterday, the guy told me I need to replace my fuel filter and something else i forget. Would my problem be that? I had a really good feeling that he was lying though just to make a couple bucks.

Well yesterday was the first time I drove the car around because I just bought it so I don't know what kind of mileage it would get. and what is "WOT"?

Some people, are just not car people.

Due to driving habits, the type of driving you've been doing, and yes, regular maintenence items, I don't think it's unreasonable for your car to get 36 miles out of a quarter of a tank. Seeing that GM gas gauges will sit on full for about ever, then start moving a steady, quick pace towards E.

Don't be broke, put a full tank of fuel in it, drive for a while, then report back. This 1/4 tank junk really doesn't help us much.

with a cam and stock gears, short trips in my town (not really city driving) i get about 16-18mpg.

i do notice that the guage can change pretty noticably from one minute to the next.

like i'll pull in to a store with 1/2 thank (dead center of the mark), and when i come out and go home 5 miles the needle is well into the black side of the line below 1/2.

fill the tank, run to near E, then fill again.

come back and tell us what you got.

I'm not finding the "car specs". I checked in the sticky section on the top of "new ls1 owners - newbie tech" but there is nothing.

I've found that when it says 1/2 on the Gauge that it's more closer to 1/4 in the Tank..

Fill it up. Then run it down to 1/4 tank. Fill it up again and check mileage. That's the only way to somewhat accurately tell. As stated earlier it sits on full for awhile. Then it starts a steady descent towards empty. You didn't actually use a 1/4 tank of gas.

It takes about 15 or 16 gallons when it is close to empty to fill but if you put in 5 gallons it goes to half a tank I tried it.

It should be a 15.5gallon tank if I'm not mistaken.

WOT means "wide open throttle" what i meant by that is if your driving around getting on it at every light then your millage will suck but i also have a 6 speed and i get great millage when im just normal driving especially since we can be at 75-80 mph and still be under 2k rpm's , is your car throughing any service engine soon codes? if you have a bad 02 sensor or somthing like that it can also cause bad fuel milage

That is exactly what I did. I put in 5 gallons and it went to close to half a tank.

Did you ever leave 1st gear?
But seriously what RPMs were you driving around at? For gas mileage you should be around 1000-1500RPMs. This is not some gutless 4 cylinder that needs to be at 3000PRMs to drive normal. Keep it in the highest gear possible.

I was shifting between 2000-3000 rpm. I guess thats where my problem is. It never sounded right to me when I shifted at lower rpms. The engine rpm would drop to 1000rpm which i dont know if thats good for the car or engine. Also sometimes a light shows up called "skip shift". I manual says that you can switch from first to 4th, but isnt that too high of a gear right after first? After what rpm should I switch from first to fourth and how much gas should I give it when I go into fourth?

Are you sure the car is not cammed?

1000RPMs is perfectly normal, and preferable actually. There is nothing "bad" about low RPMs.

Also sometimes a light shows up called "skip shift". I manual says that you can switch from first to 4th, but isnt that too high of a gear right after first? After what rpm should I switch from first to fourth and how much gas should I give it when I go into fourth?
Skip shift is a feature that GM put onto their manual LSx cars to improve their city gas mileage, and help avoid the gas guzzler tax. It locks the driver out of 2nd gear and "forces" them to go to 4th instead. Perfectly fine for the engine, again this is not a gutless 4 cylinder. If your shifter is not blocking you out of 2nd gear when the light comes on then that means the previous owner bought a "skip shift eliminator". But this doesn't mean you can't skip around gears, I often skip from 1st to 3rd to 5th etc.
Hell, just too see if I could, Ive started in 4th gear before and the car didn't bog much, gotta love low end torque
