Default Simple power

Hi guys, names Tim. Some of yall might have seen my propane thread and already know what im doing. Some not. The short version is i just bought an 2000 ls1 block. I intend to put it into a offroad tube buggy that will see frequent high rpms. My original plans were to sleeve the block and build a 427 stroker. After doing alooot of reading tonight it seems that sleeving is not only ridiculously expensive, but makes it not worthwhile as i could just go out and buy LSx block that would suit needs much better. So my question now turns to whats a good way to pull about 500hp, n/a, running 6.125 rods, a carb intake, and peak hp in about the 7000 to 8000 rpm range. I guess also without resleeving the block. Thanks for the help

500hp at the crank?

cause that's not very hard at all...and you don't need 7K rpm to do it.

even 500rwhp (fbody drivetrain) is not horribly difficult...even with stock cubes.

a basic 383 with a custom cam, high flowing heads and the associated parts should do it pretty easy

Your goal isn't too hard to hit.

You can get a fresh LS1 block which you have, use a stock crank, stock connecting rods with upgraded rod bolts, and Diamond, CE, etc forged pistons.

Get a good set of heads, a cam spec'd to your needs, and a valvetrain to support it all and you'll be in the ballpark.

To put it into perspective, I made 433 RWHP in my '01 Z28 using the stock shortblock, Livernois Stage II 243 heads, TSP Torquer V2 cam, upgraded pushrods, Yella Terra 1.7 rockers, and a lightweight flywheel. I used a stock LS6 intake and ported TB. This was through a 6 speed and 10 bolt rearend.

If you factor in a 15% drivetrain loss my crank HP is 497. Not bad considering I could have gone with a "bigger" cam, FAST 92mm intake and TB, and the tune was safe for nitrous and on an 89 degree day with over 90% humidity.

So now you see that your goal of 500 crank HP is doable while saving money for other things. With 497 HP and 460 TQ you would be doing really well and keeping some green in your pocket. It's not hard with these engines.

sounds pretty good to me. The main reasoning behind the higher rpms is my wheel speed, i would like as much as possible. So with a 383 i would or would not have to resleeve the block?

I vote a 383 rotating assembly in a ls1 block with a good head and cam combo and some long tube headers you'll be over your 500hp goal. Also there will be no need to even take this engine to 7-8k rpms. You'll probly be making 500 crank torque around 4,500rpm and over 500hp at 6,500rpm.

No resleve, just a stroker crank with rods and pistons to match.

the higher rpms i can turn the more wheelspeed i will in turn recieve. and on alot of the slick obstacles and hills around here wheelspeed is my friend. So to make sure im catching this right i need to get a LS1 383 assemembly, good cam, wonderful heads, and i should be good.

A 383 can easily be built to handle 7k rpm's but if you really wanna spin it a 346 will handle it a little more reliably because the rods have less reciprocating weight. Strokers make more tq earlier but don't like the rpm's as much. That is the trade off.

run a different gear for more wheelspin then and don't spin the motor that high. I don't know of any tube buggies turning that kind of rpm or running a carb on top. EFI is king for off angle trails.

i wont be running carb. im running propane. have to use a carb manifold for it however. The gearing in my axles is 6.72. maybe i was just overthinking the super duper wheelspin thing. with about 5k and those gears i guess ill be ok.
