Worth the buy?!?!
Hello everyone,
I have a question that could be answered easily by my personal opinion, but I would like to get logical answers from some of you out there who have been dealing with LS1s for a while.
I'm not new to the F-body, as I currently own a 2002 Firebird, but as it is the V6 model I don't know much about the LS1. With intention to build it up, I bought the V6 just over a year ago. That was a lot bigger of a project than I could have ever imagined, so I have scrapped that idea and I'm selling the car in a week. This leads to my question:
I found a cosmetically and mechanically flawless 2002 T/A WS6(owned by the original owner...a 55 year old lady) for sale and was able to negotiate to the price of $9500. That sounds like a great deal, but the car has 142,000 miles on it. It runs perfect with no excessive noise or knocking, but how long could I expect that to last? I know the LS1 is a tough-built and long-lasting engine, but is it worth the trouble I may run in to? Anybody have any approx. $$$ figures for what it would run to have the engine restored, or maybe even upgraded with some performance parts? Considering the low price, I may even be able to replace the engine with a new crate motor, and still pay less than I would to get a low mileage WS6.
I get home from deployment in 5 days, and I'm really looking forward to driving the T/A, so every part of me wants to go ahead and settle the deal. I may not be thinking this through. So, that's where I need some help.
Chris

Any smoke from the exhaust on startup? Oil consumption? The only thing I would be concerned about at that mileage is maybe spinning a bearing if you decide to drive it hard. $9,500 is a bit steep with that mileage also.
There are a lot of sponsors that have "value" 347 shortblocks that might fit your needs if you want to go that route. (Stock crank, rods, forged pistons). It really depends on where you want to go with the car in the long term.
Personally if it were me on a budget...... I would get a "value" shortblock, some decent quality ported heads and cam package, replace all gaskets, timing chain, ported stock throttle body, headers and just assemble it myself. I don't know if you were planning to do the work yourself or have a shop do it?

142k for 95 hundred. . . . Ha, ha. . . . . .
If that is the price you are looking to pay, you should be able to get a 2000 or so with under 80k with no issues. . . . . Just look around.
