Ok will someone please explain what it means to spin a bearing? I thought the whole point of a bearing was to spin with as little friction is possible.

basically, you spin it so fast that it loses its tolerance and flops around, causing all sorts of **** to hit into other **** that it shouldnt. a bearing that was a couple bucks could put a piston shaped hole in your motor, for instance on the more extreme side

One part of the bearing doesn't (where it mounts) and one part does (the rotating part).

A spun bearing is when the whole darn thing moves, or it was spun too much and wore it out, making it loose. Something along those lines I think.

I've been there, done that. Not fun.

The way I understand it, either a rod or main bearing fuses to the crank, causing it to spin inside the cap/rod. That's why they call it a "spun" bearing. I could be wrong, though.

okay thanks for clearing that up. I keep hearing about peoples' spun rod and main bearings and i'm thinking what the hell.

In the car motor context: First a bearing (rod or main) is a ring cut into two half circle solid pieces clamped in place with little tabs that prevent them from spinning, they are stationary. Oil is pumped into the space between the bearing cap and main and rod journals. This space is very tight when it wears excessively then the bearing can move enough that the tabs come out of their slots and they spin in the main caps or rod ends.
Here is a nice post on wiki with pics

Good thing you just want to know what it means, instead of how to fix it once it happens!

A stock engine can spin a bearing just as easily.

Normally oiling problems; running low on oil, dirty oil, low oil pressure...

I never make it to the "spun bearing" stage. . . . I always seem to get the hole in piston desease. . .

It means you have to break out your piggy bank.

Don't ask me how I know this.... My piggy bank has been broken out a time or two, lol!

But hey... That's racing!

Unless you're like me and spin a bearing just cruising down the highway. "Hey, what's that clacking noise... crap."

A spun bearing can also ruin the entire motor not just the the bearing that spun and the surface it was touching. If a bearing spins it can cover the oil passage and starve the rest of the motor for oil causing the whole thing to eats itself apart.

Ok if it happens just drop the oil pan and put your cheap new bearing in filler up with oil and run 'er. JK its worse then that. Well if it needs honing just take some sand paper to the block. Whatever you can reach.

Ok on a serious note. Its what the guys have been saying. It sucks if you do it but then you can do your build the way you want it.
