Default 98 ls1 ?

Hello all great site. Im thinking of getting a 98 LS1 motor/trans with everything included for my 67 nova. Its out of an 98 camaro ss with under 75K. Ive done some searching and read about the differences between the 98 and newer models but want to know if there is a big enough difference to look for something newer like 2002 or ? Do the thinner sleeves cause any issues. I guess the 98 has a fuel return line? other than having to run another line is there another disadvantage? I hear the computer is specific to that year, does this cause reprogramming hassles? Will a newer intake and headers get the HP close to 350? What specific problems if any are associated with the earlier models like the 1998. Thanks in advance.

The '98 LS1 will be just fine. The biggest differences are the lack of an LS6 intake ('01 & up) as well as different head castings, which in my experience didn't make a difference with minor mods until I wen't with a larger cam. You can always swap to an LS6 intake and 241 or better heads in the future.

The rear oil galley is narrower on a 97-00 LS1 block. You can open it up a bit on the rear over with a dremel and a steady hand. You can also do so on the block if you are very steady. I did using an old gaskets as a guide.

As Arctic said, by the time you are ready for upgrades, you will be replacing the heads and intake anyway.

i have a 98....

at 100k miles i installed my mods..
for 10k miles i have had.. prc ls6 heads, ms4 (a donkey dick big *** cam), 4k stall, 410s, ported 90/90 intake combo, full exhaust, etc etc etc..

it was tuned good enough that i drive it every single day as a DD..

i make over 400rwhp and tq..

on the brink of 10s NA...

you can answer yourself if 98s are "weak"..

if it were me...

id buy whatever i could... then i would install...

stock ls6 heads.. 300 bucks or less
stock ls6 intake.. 300 bucks or less
LT's.. 250 bucks
228cam or an ls6 intake if you dont want something like that.. depends on what you get.. both can be had for pretty cheap..
cheap set of springs.. 100 bucks
hardened push rods.. 75 bucks
ls6 oil pump.. cheap
timing chain.. cheap

that would be a nice build that would net you in the ball park of 350rwhp-370rwhp depending on the cam choice and what not.. its fairly cheap also..

Thanks guys, it sounds like the older version isnt really a disadvantage to get started with. Im interested in this one because everythings there so I dont have to track down a bunch of different pieces to make it work. Now if I can just pull the trigger, honestly im kinda stuck in the old school mode and cant really warm up to the looks of the LS1 in stock trim. I guess its the fear of the unknown but ive messed with enough carbs to where the fun is long gone with that. What about the fuel pump/pickup assy. Could i graph the assy out of a camaro into my new 67 tank? Fabrication is my bag so the metal work wouldnt be a problem but ive never even seen how the newer electric style assy's work or mount.

man honestly... i know a lot of old school muscle guys.. one ride in a stock/slightly modded ls1 and you can change their ways... not to mention what a H/C ls1 does for them....
i honestly dont know too much about conversions... but on the main page there is a forum for hybrids/conversions... those would be the guys to ask..

my dad is a old school gear head.. (well not so much, hes in his early 40s).. but he talked down to the ls1s and most newer "muscle cars"... he has been out of the car scene for quite a few years now.. my little sister i 9 and he hasnt owned anything since a few years before she was born..

when i first got mine he was telling me about how i didnt know power... it was pretty much bone stock..
i took him for a ride and he about **** his pants... mostly because of how fast my stock car was.. but at that he said he hadnt been in hardly any TRUE street* cars that fast... stuff that only came out on weekends and what not yes.. but not something that drove like a stock car..

its kinda cool..

Its funny that you say that because my dad like 40 and he was talking down to me when i first got my car. He was saying they are slow cars that cant make much power. The first time i went to the track and ran a 13.40 my dad almost **** his pants. Mind you that was the first time i ever raced so im sure i could have gotten more out of it. Now i'm untuned and have basic bolt on's and i run 12.7's and 12.6's all day. She's a 98 too so this helps prove its a good year

awesome... my 98 runs 7.2s@95mph in the 1/8.. not tuned for heads spinning and in 85 degree weather.... i dont see a problem with them...
