thinking about a 408
hey everyone. i just got an 01 SS.its all stock but i my friends have told me to get a 408.ive read a little bit about them but dont know much.
where do i get one?
should i buy a longblock or is it cheaper to build one?
and what all i need to go along with it?
and when buying parts for it,where do i look? do they still count it as a lsx? thanks.

ive seen alot of guys thikn they get out cheap with the motor build but its the extras that add up...tranny built to holds power clutch/stall, rear end, fuel system. and since youre stock youre going to need EVERYTHING else, lid, FAST 92mm intake manifold & tb, longtubes, y pipe + catback or true duals, a tune and thats just the basics, im sure im forgetting stuff. id be ready to spend 10k easy. hope you got some deep pockets. lemons is right, you can make alot of power on the 346 so unless you want a ton of power, a brand new engine, and a very light wallet, id stick with the 346 for a while.

his thread.....
OP, I think you need to do just a LITTLE research on this first..
Built rear end- $2000+ thats if you get a deal on a used one
Built Trans- Depends on m6 or a4 and how in depth you go.. Safe guess would be $1k+
Suspension- $1k+
408- http://texas-speed.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=45&catid=28
Intake- Min. of 90/90 setup.. looking at $900 for a good deal.. I although would recommend a ported 92/92..
Exhaust- Depending on how cheap you want to go and full exhaust or before the axle anywhere from $500-$1200..
Fuel- injectors and fuel pump will go for around $400
Tune- $400+ depending on who is tuning it
Lid- $60 if you buy a used one
gears- $200
converter (if a4)- $600+
And unless you can do all of this work or know someone who will do it for free expect a lot more for labor.. You have the parts sitting there right now.
There is more stuff you would still need but this is the basic over view... there are many MISC things that add up REAL quick.. oil anti freeze things breaking things needing replacing "while you are in there" etc etc etc..

While you may not like the advice, you should consider starting at back of the car and working your way forward. You break a lot less stuff this way and can keep reliability. Start with exhaust, rear end and suspension. Then move forward. If everything does not work together, you will have problems.
If you have a good 346, you could go Procharger for less than a 408 and have a lot of fun. Get the D1SC and you can always put the 408 in later for something truly fast.

) I can make power and not have to worry about blowing up stock trannys and 10-bolts. That and i love knowing what things can handle. Everything is a experiment to see just how good of a job GM did. lol
I dont really agree with that. I guess i dont see the point in replacing something that isnt broken, is it for re-sale? So you can get $100 for your stock 10 bolt? Or a $200 core for your GOOD tranny (its a $200 core for a blown one)? If its not a DD, why not use it till it breaks. Im 530hp/640trq @ 9psi, soon to be 14, on the stock 10 bolt and M6 tranny (even though ive got a th400 and 12 bolt sitting, just incase). Personally, id rather spend a couple bucks on things that will protect what i have, like a TA cover and good trq arm and run around on the stock stuff until it lets me know i need to upgrade. But im not a millionare, im still a poor college student.
Maybe I should have said not blowing up any more stock tranny's or 10-bolts. I only replaced parts when they broke, but wasn't about to replace a part that broke with another one just like it, i.e. broke the 10-bolt, put a 12-bolt, T56 killed itself, put in a built one.
I just know how much it sucks breaking the rear and not having a car for two weeks while you wait for the new one to ship...
I'm also a broke college student, which is why I've been running around with a pretty serious drivetrain setup and a bolt-on motor for a while
At least I'll graduate in May and be bringing in some actual money. Start with what you have now, get a good feel for it and then move your way up slowly.
