I am looking at a 2000 transam to buy . It has took a hit on the drivers rear tire . the rear axle is off center to passenger side approx. 3 inches . can anyone tell me how strong (or weak ) the panhard bars are on these cars ? Could it be bent holding the rear off center ? I am looking at the car in person tomorrow ,but only have seen pics at this time . Any help would be appreciated ! THANKS

Just a guess, but probably trashed the lower control arms, panhard, and likely the actual mounting points on the body of the car itself. That is normally what goes down with an axle hit. You just need to see what kind of structure damage has been sustained if there aren't any really bad tears in the mounts it might be an easy fix but if the lower mounts are badly damaged you might want to keep shopping, unless you want to foot a big *** repair bill to get it back on the road/track.

Well those pics are just a little too small to see without a microscope. I told you exactly what happens in a wreck like that. I would need pics of the underside of the car where everything bolts into the body to mount the rear axle to really asses the damage.

OK .Thanks for the replies ! Im going to look at it tomorrow . I plan to put it on their rack and inspect the damage . It has 91,500 on the clock . it an auto ,leather ,etc. asking $4200.00 . Think its worth that with minimal under damage ?

last year i got into some dirt on the road coming out of a corner WOT, lost it and hit the curb hard, it actually bent the mounting point for the panhard bar where it bolts to the car, one Lower Control Arm. Also wiped out the 10 bolt itself too.
300 bucks for a used rear end off Craigs List, 25 for a LCA out of a junkyard, and 75 to cut the PHB mount off the car in the junkyard.
I cut the bent mount off so i was left with good metal, welded the new one on plus some gusset plates, been running like a champ ever since.
the rear end was off center after all the repairs, i couldnt get the new mount back in the exact same spot. it was roughly a half inch to the driver side. an aftermarket adjustable PHB solved that but it drove fine for months.

I went and inspected the car today . I found the weak link so I guess this thread is done . The damage was the panhard bar mount on the axle tube broke lose thus allowing the rearend to shift . A welder and the car would be back to good ! The quarter was repairable with a good body man and the car would be back on the road ! BUT ! I didn't buy the car . For only having 91500 miles it was rough ! Cracked dash, cracked passenger door panel, radio missing ,front drivers headlight wouldn't open ,and probably a lot more things if I would have kept looking !Shorty headers with magnaflow sounded awful ! So I'm still shoppin !

just order a bmr suspentionkit for the car, new panhard bar, draglinks, springs, ect. the car was not hit hard enough to do any real damage. I own a body shop i see cars like that all the time.
