How long will an LS1 last?
#61
When I was in the market for a LS1 my wife introduced me to a guy with a TA for sale saying he only wanted 4k for it, and that it was a good deal. When I actually saw the mileage I was amazed and it didn't seem like much of a good deal then, but the odometer read 318k, the most I ever seen on any LS1. I was surprised by the fact that it still ran well, and the fact that he wanted that much money for it.
I ended up buying a 99 TA with 149k on the odo. Right now it has 152k and it runs just as strong as the low mileage LS1's

I bought my '98 with 78k miles on it for $4500. Engine lasted until about 83k when the oil pump went out while my wife was driving and it ate a rod bearing.
I know it had a hard life before I got it, but I was rather surprised. Right now I've got about 10k miles or so on my forged 383 rebuild and no issues so far.

I'll be hitting 100k on my way home from class today and my car runs flawlessly with no leaks. Has long tubes, lid, and ls6 manifold and oil changed every 3,000. Changing it at longer intervals scares me lol. I keep my car under 2,000 rpm's 98% of the time unless on highway (a4). I think you could run it a long time if maintained, a buddy of mine has 130,000 with cam, 100 shot, etc and his is just fine, lol. I am contemplating 3.73's though, would running higher rpm on the highway cause significant more ware on the engine since it's under more load? It's a daily driver lol

I have 72k almost 73k on mines, not exactly "high" mileage but not a brand new vehicle either. No real issues yet and I've been driving it basically everyday since last April. Few quirks here and there that I've ran into but nothing major, just a few things that tends to go bad overtime.

148k miles and running like its brand new! pops bought it brand new, oil has been changed with mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 every 3k miles. It has been beaten the **** out of its entire life, and so far has had not a single issue. T-56 was getting a little antsy at 147k, so i got it built. Technically still could have been driven with no problems though. Such a reliable, easy to work on car! She really wants to last!

my 6 speed bolt on car has 230k on stock unopened long block , trans, and rear and it ran 11.9 for the previuos owner right around 200k
its got some piston slap when cold started but I dont plan on pulling it until it gives me a reason.
I come from a past modding supercharged 3800's where modding 200k + cars is pretty common , GM engines will last pretty well if you exercise some common sense... keep rpm's within reason , change oil regularly , keep out of detonation , dont overheat them

The majority of cars now a days will last a long time. And there is a difference between abusing a car and driving it hard. Abuse falls in categories like not doing maintenance, going over redline, redlining the car when its cold, etc. Driving hard is enjoying the cars power while keeping the RPM's within limits, letting it warm up and doing the maintenance on it. The majority of people drive these cars hard, if they didn't most would just get a V6. But that doesn't mean its been abused.

I have 114k on my 99 SS. Everything is stock and works flawlessly. Apart from knock sensors, broken pcv hose, and a bad waterpump Ive had no problems! I drive the car hard occasionally and maintain it on the dot. Maintenance is key! I think the engine will do 200k (I hope).

I'm new to this forum but here are my $0.02.
I'm the second owner of an '02 SS M6. This car was VERY well maintained with 27K miles when I bought it. It's sitting at 49K miles with the bottom end blown out. To date, I have no idea what happened. Synthetic oil changes every time. I had just changed the oil (using Mobil 1 5W-30) and the car currently has 450 miles on that oil change. It had 5000 miles on the last one.
There are no performance mods to this car other than an underdrive crank pulley. And no, only seldom was this car driven hard. And I do mean seldom.
I went to start it up one morning and the car shook like I was in a 10.0 earthquake and puked oil out the oil pan.
There are no guarantees.
Now, I'm looking to do who-knows-what with the new build. Ideally, I'd like to build a 427 with about 500 RWHP. (I just like the idea of having a '427'. Reminds me of the old school vette's.)

mine spun a bearing @ 31k
my car has never seen any abuse of any kind, the owner before my had it since it was driven 1-3k miles and was a 50+ engineer that only drove it in the summertime, i bougth it driven 31k and drove it for 2-3 weeks and te motor went burst.
i took it off the road then and it has bin in the garage since (almost 6 years)
damn man... when i was writing this, there was a earthquake here! about 4 on ricther, wow man that was strange
