Default What's the best grade of gas to use??

I've been using Shell premium, is this good? or does it really matter which one i use as far as grade is concerned? I guess my question is, have any of you used plus or just regular unleaded??
Thanks

Thanks

Shell premium is good. I use BP/Amoco ultimate. Do a search. There was a pretty big thread about this subject not too long ago.

my question is not about good gas, I'm asking if you have to run premium gas, or can you run regular, or plus?

You should always premium in these cars. It's also recomended in your manual and should say premium unleaded recomended on you gas door.

You CAN run regular in an LS1 but its not recommended. The computer has to compensate for pinging by pulling out timing and the car is not going to perform as well.

the car was designed to run on poor 87 octane. otherwise gm would have had to replace motors. the gas is really bad near mexico on the texas cities.

So i'd guess an untuned motor would not sustain damage with the crappy gas but it would not run very happy.

otherwise you could just torch your motor with the hose then put some 87 in and bust the motor and they'd have to warranty it.

I remember i was tuning a VW once (corrado g60 boosted heavily) and the owner let his sister drive the car, we were stumped with the KR/bucking, turned out she put 87 in cause she always put 87 in her honda. That tuning session ended abruptly after calling the sister out on the gas. Had to wait a week or two with a detuned timing map to get the car back in shape. (Moral of story don't let dipshits drive your car and fill up with crap gas). BP/amoco/chevy/sunoco only. None of that qwik-e-mart **** thats been stepped on with a water hose at night lol

Whats the highest octane one could run without damaging the motor? I usually use 91, would somthing like 96 or 100 provide any performance improvement?

running high octane like 100 or something is not goin to damage the motor. If its leaded gas it will kill the cats and/or o2 sensors.

If its unleaded fuel it wont damage the motor. However, using a higher octane than necessary may actually hurt performance. running 100 octane on an engine designed to run on 91 slows the burn rate quite a bit and can actually reduce the engines output. Dyno tests have been done on a mild small block chevy with compression of about 9.5:1. This is pump gas-compatible and running race gas was actually found to reduce output up to 20 hp! (this was on your average 350 street motor, approx 300-350 hp.)

BP Amoco Ultimate for me.....the owner's manual says 92 octane or higher, so I wouldn't risk going under that octane rating. It may not hurt the motor, but it will sure hurt your fun!
