Is it ok to drive after back fires?
Hi all, i have a 98 Z28 Auto, With SLP LID FLOPAC, Ported and Polished MAF and LM2 cat back. Noticed a few days ago the cats were starting to smell and had minor back fires when starting, I only do 7 miles to work a few days a week in really heavy traffic, 7 miles takes an hour! So I thought tonight i'd give it a long run, put my foot right down it took off then started back firing and missing really badly, a couple of minutes later the engine light came on, now it jolts into gears, but doesnt run too bad, I have a long drive to the only Camaro specialist here in London, just wondering if it's going to be ok to drive there or should i get it towed? and do you think the short journeys could have done this? it's only done 11,000 miles
Thanks
Thanks

How are your plugs and plug wires? Have you ever had it tuned or anything like that? What octane gas do you run in it? I dont know about driving it there it might be nothing at all or it might be serious its up to you if you wana get it towed there.

Think i'll get it towed, I'm using 98 octane, shell v-power, widely considered the best petrol you can get, so i've heard, Plugs were checked about a month ago and seemed fine, Havent had it tuned at all, guess i'll wait and see what the mechanic says monday

If you don't have one, I suggest buying a basic code reader/scanner. Even if you don't know how to work on cars, being able to pull the codes from the computer is an essential thing. At the very least, you can level with the mechanic/shop working on your car and they're more likely to take care of you instead of screw you over due to ignorance...

Yeah you're right, i sell cars for a living, Audi BMW etc, so we have a universal type code reader, i'm going to plug into it now, where's the plug in port? the reader i have doesnt give codes as such but will say, "left bank lean" etc I know quite a bit about engines, but just never have time to work on my own cars.

Thanks for the help guys, turned out the Ported and Polished MAF was causing the problem, Mechanic put on a new modified one, it's like a different car! Never felt so powerful or responsive, makes a HUGE difference!
