It is bad to "over" rev an engine without any load on it. Take a computer programming tool, hook it up and watch the knock counter between N revs and in gear at the same revs ... you get a lot more knock from the motor when there's no load. The reason for that is the mass inertia ... when there's no load ... you're spinning all that power at the crank and the energy has no where to go but back out on itself. When you're in load and spinning all that power, the energy gets transferred out through the tranny to driveshaft to diff to axles to wheel ...

I enjoy setting off alarms in parking structures once in a great while. Once in a while doesn't hurt, but I do get a kick out of it when i do it on accident.
As far as doing damage to the motor, it's bs, Just don't bounce off the rev limiter for eight hours, you'll be alright.

Agree with what everyone else on here said. That guy who told you that and his friends who agreed with him should all do us a favor and throw their car keys off a bridge and never come around a car again lol.
