Default What cam to buy to start my build

The car I have is an 01 som ws6 m6. It has a 5.0 short throw shifter, flowmaster exhaust and k&n filter, this is how I bought it.

I would like to start a slow build starting with headers and cam for this summer, but eventually heads and intake OVER THE WINTER. My goal is to build a high 10 second street car. I would like to buy used headers 1 7/8 and a new custom cam that will work with tfs 215 OR 225 heads. I want to have the most power and streetable, Thanks for any advise I am new to this.

Do you want a small Cam lot of nitruse or big cam small shoot. There's a lot of nitruse cam like the one I have 230 232 591 595 114 or u can go big cam n a nice heads, cam, intake combo.

No nitrous as of now in the plans, a cam that can be driven on the street.

Call a sponsor, tell them your current mods and your goals (track times and/or power #s) and they will help you out.

get the cam last to tie all your pieces together.talk to Pat-G about a custom cam.or look at a ed curtis street sweeper.consider a vengeance racing head/cam kit. Studderen runs 10.66 on pump gas with stock 241s and a m6 with a street sweeper cam.

Big *** cam...he want's a streetable car. I love it when guy's tell others to throw a "BIG" cam in. Bigger doesn't always mean better/faster.

If you want something with good street manors and make good power and do well at the track, then I would look into something in the mid 200's. Like a 226/230 or 228/228 or 228/232-234. Personally I wouldn't go any bigger then a 230/234 range.

A overall good streetable cam that would make tons of power and torque in the low and mid range would be like a 222/224 to a 224/226. Good power under the curve and through-out the entire RPM range. The 222 cam's love nitrous BTW. If your goal is to hit 10's, you will need some juice with one of these cams I just mentioned. The smaller ones get my vote because you won't have to spin it to the moon to make power, you will pull the guys with the much larger cams and if you decide to spray, then you should have no problem meeting your goal. Good luck!

What do you guys think about the TSP XS 233/239 cam? I have this in mine, it's excellent on the street (my stock heads are ported also w/roller rockers), and if I ever go with heads like trick flows or afrs i'm sure the cam would still be great for them.

I run a split duration camshaft 231/227 and it makes awesome power all over the board. With the spray I have hit 10's with ease. **** big cams if you aren't a top end junkie. Go with a cam as mention about and spray that thing.

i run a 230/227 cam. i have never rode in a cammed car. my car is just a DD street car. i honestly would step up to a larger cam after seeing how civil this cam is. its all in the tune.

alot of people bash big cams, but if your spending all the time and money for tuning and everything get all the HP you can get. i know somebody will say thats BS stick to a small cam and so fourth..im not saying TREX or anything. if i could do it over again i would have went with the TSP 233/239 cam.

whenever i think of a big cam, i always get a smile on my face when i see TRMIN8R and his MS3 killing cobras, and turbo and sprayed cars.. sick!

I wasn't bashing larger Cams, larger cams serve their purpose and work well with certain builds. I know a few guys that have thought BIG and wish they hadn't. I think alot of guys get too hyper and look at dyno #'s and then go in the wrong direction.

ur right bigger cams dont always mean better. but in this case it does i beat alot of people with mild cams and heads with my cam only car and its not by the nose either we are talking car lengths. but turk has a good point its certain builds or how i say its all in your setup look at the top ten record holders they all have huge cams fyi trex. but like i said i street my trex everyday and it has half a tune on it and still runs fine anytime of day and when that 80k Z06 pulls up i have no problem with them.

Thanks for all the input everyone, I am still undecided, however I am looking at a vengeance racing custom cam 239/243 on a 114+4 ? or my second choice might be to go with cartek racing and have them create a custom cam. Everyone says its all in the tune not the size of the cam to be streetable? I will be adding heads later on. Opinions on my choices please.

Yes, a tune plays a critical part....but you can't go throwing in a monster cam and expect great streetability in all cases. And I highly doubt "everyone says its all in the tune and not the cam" if everyone said that there would be a lot of unhappy customers.

Look into the G5X3 cam from LG Motorsports. It is very streetable with the right tune and makes great mid-range power but will still pull to around 66-6800 RPM. ? though, are you planning to flycut?
