Maybe not an average, but I'm thinking it (the needle) camps at 210 as long as coolant temperatures stay below a certain operating temperature, after which, the needle rises showing an overheat. I just don't know what the upper limit is before the needle starts moving over the 210 marker. My thermo is sticking currently (I hope it is just the thermo), so I've watched my needle raise above the 210, but I don't have any software to monitor the temperature to see what the temp is when the needle moves off of 210.

Well, I've seen scanner temps as high as 225-230°F while the needle was still at 210. So my guess is, it has to be above 230°F to show movement past 210.

Jesus. Wouldn't it be easier just to stick an aftermarket analog gauge in the car-hooked up to a sending unit, of course?

That^^^

Last time I did any logging on my car, I had about a 20 minute period where the actual temp stayed between 175-180 and the gauge showed ~210 the whole time.

Not true it just has to stay there long enough to be averaged in...geez you guys just don't listen to reason. You think i'm making this stuff up?

When I did my test it was from a cold start and the car never went above 180, yet the gauge went to ~210 a few minutes into the drive and stayed there for close to 20 minutes. How does that fit your theory?

Yes, we do think you are making it up.

As I stated, I did a cold start scan for an unrelated issue. Coolant temps were equal to outside temp to start. They rose only as high as 188°F on the scanner during that key cycle, yet the gage needle was within 1mm of the 210 mark. So please explain how the average of 66°F to 188°F somehow equals 205-210°F. And please don't tell me it was averaging in coolant temps from the previous key cycle.

Looking at the scanning data, you cannot convince me that this is an average. An average cannot be higher than the highest observed number. It's some sort of buffer between a certain temp range.
