I mite be cheaper to buy heads port by TSP then pay some one locally.look at the TSP website ,they sell ported heads and cams for a good price.what tranny, rear gear ,and exhaust do you have?

The TSP guys seem great and if ur serious I'd say at least give them a call and talk with them about it! Just remember, with more power, the rest of your car will need upgrading... Have fun and good luck! Lots of good info on this site!

Definitely will have to upgrade the rest of the car. I thought I would do a simple 408 stoker with a Procharger and EVERYTHING seems to be breaking around it. I am only pushing around 750-800 horsepower. Now I have a Viper Specced 6speed and narrowed 9" w/ full spool 3.89 gears. I think the next thing I will have to replace is a driveshaft and only then I still think the transmission will be on borrowed time...

DO NOT get a big cam.... get a medium size cam, like 230/239, 224, 231/237(get a pat g cam for best results).... almong those lines, get a big cam and you wont build power untill higher rpm, the drive wont be as smooth, heads, lots of stuff you can do, i would just buy a set of stage 2.5 5.3 heads or ls6 from TSP and just sell yours for more mod $$.

These guys are sponsors and have one the best CNC programs for our stock heads. Get them to spec a cam to match the heads. You won't be sorry>>>>>>> www.advancedinduction.com

I do suggest checking sponor websites which are located to the right--->
Once you looked at places like Cartek, Rapid Motorsports, TSP, Vengence Racing, ESP, and so on and so forth you should get an idea of what you need and what the cost it.
I did my swap about 2-3 years ago, cam only and found it very rewarding. I would not worry about heads right now. Due to the fact your engine is a LS1 and they are a small bore type block and due to the change of technology, there are better stuff out there and its HARD to resell stuff in limited demand. Anything LS2 or newer went 4.000" bore or bigger (see LS3) and most aftermarket heads are for LS2 or newer. Porting stock will help but for the diff in cost, your not far off better flowing stuff. But I should mention that there is the concept of total flow that no matter how peaky a cyl head flow #'s are, they are still limited by the intake track and most importantly the intake manifold. SO some the BIG CFM heads are really only fully utilized when spun past 7k rpms and your running a sheet metal intake so there is a fine balance you need to decide.
Like said, stick with a cam upgrade first. The cost should be approx 1,000.00 due to parts, and tune. I am including no labor so you gotta do it on your own, and you do needed a few uncommon tools.
Budget for....
Cam (300-400$)
Spring kit (Springs, Retainers, Locks; IF you stay beehive type spring you can reuse your stock retainers.)
Pushrods (hardened and measured to spec)
Timing Chain (ls2)
Oil Pump (ported LS6)
Fluids- Oil, Coolant, Gaskets, Seals
Tune- Dyno Preferred
