Dropping in the motor

Default Dropping in the motor

So my friend bought a Z28 roller and we're getting ready to install his motor and 6spd. I was wondering how much of a complete motor can we install. How easy would it be to drop the motor and tranny from the top.?

shortblock
heads
instake
flywheel
clutch
bellhousing
front accessories

I think I've seen some guys on this forum drop it in from the top, but I see even more guys going underneath the car and raising the assembly into the car. I'd imagine that coming in from the top would be more difficult. Are you guys able to come in from the bottom?

ive seen and heard people taking out the LS1 from the top. but i think its more common to drop it from the bottom

Sorry guys i guess i miss worded that. The car is currently a roller (no motor or tranny). My question is how complete can the motor be to swap it into the car. Can we install the motor with heads,intake,valve covers,headers,front accessories,clutch,fly wheel,bellhousing. Is it possible to have the motor and tranny together when we put it in the car from the top..?

Not sure with transmission but I have seen bare longblock ls1's, no accessories or intake, dropped in from the top quite a few times.

To install a long block through the top with a transmission attached you have to leave the intake manifold off possibly even the valve covers. Pull the radiator and condenser coil, Have a jack to lift the body up a little bit for the tranny to clear the ground until you can even the motor/tranny out inside its cradle.

Personally I have done it both ways. To me, Its easier to put it in from the bottom but more time consuming. Its harder to put in in from the top but less time consuming, and less scratches in your engine bay.
