Default sarted up the z28 on open headers and it surges like crazy?

hi guys i was curious on how my 2000 camaro z28 would sound on open headers, so i started her up and it sound like **** and it would surge up and down on rpms first it sounded like i had a cam then it would surge really bad like if it was going to shut off any ideas or would it go away once i install y-pipe ?

also should add that they are the hooker 1 3/4 long tubes with emission hookups and it has not been tuned

The motor needs to be tuned since there's more air moving through it and not enough fuel now.

Did you hook the O2 sensors back up? The car may need to re-learn the tune with the new exhaust, but it shouldn't run that bad.

Was your car previously tuned on a full catback exhaust, or what? I did the same as you and my idle fluctuated quite a bit and it wanted to die sometimes. Then, like what RedHotG8 said, get it tuned once you figure out what system to put on there.

It's loud as hell, huh?

It does that because the front O2 sensors are too close to open air. You are supposed to have at least 18" of pipe after the front O2 sensors so they read correctly. The open air causes them to read different and dump way too much fuel in the motor.

i installed my y-pipe and it was still surging so i removed every spark plug wire and re-installed,
that didnt help so then i started to double check every sensor till i heard an air leak then i found it was the egr hose that goes on top of the intake manifold was missing that large oring gasket uurrrrrggg something so small can cause my car to sound like it had a huge cam

im glad i learned something today ..
