Default question bout down shifting safely

Whenever I raced it was from a stop (i.e. track) and never a roll. I was wondering what you guys would consider a safe speed to down shift to 2nd when racing from a roll (I heard some guys say they put it in 2nd at 70 ) what about 3rd? thanks

What do you have for a rear ? Just look at what rpm you tach out at and that will tell ya.

70mph for 2nd is way too much. That's a 3rd gear mph. 75-80mph is the max I'll go to 3rd in.

I have been running second for anthing around 50mph, if it's above 75 I just got right to fourth. I have stock gears though, I guess if you wanted to just see what 3500rpm is in each gear on the speedo and make a mental note of it.

I went to second at 60-65 MPH with 3.42's and the tach jumped to 5,x00 RPM. I might have been going a little slower, but I still went to 2nd at higway speeds!

55 miles per hour is the optimum speed to down shift into second, I used to do this all the time and it alway got me out of any tough situation.

look at the tach. if it is above 6 then you really are not produce the maximum amount of hp. you might as well go to 3 if it is to high.

Huh? What do you mean? Say I am in 4th and want to downshift to 3rd, where exactly do I tap the gas? Before I take it out of 4th, inbetween the 4th 3rd downshift? What damage could I possibly do? I haven't had to downshift yet like this, I just put it in neutral and hit the brake.

I think he just means give it a little gas as you shift so that the RPMs stay consistent with the next gear. If you're in third gear at 4,000 rpms, and shift straight into second without giving it gas, you'll dog the hell out of your tranny.

teh blip of the gas, is also known as double clutching, push clutch in, put in neutral, clutch out, rev, clutch in, put in gear, and with foot on gas, let clutch out.

makes it easier on components when your revmatch, and don't just throw it in 2nd... synchros don't like that too much.

Do you really have to let out the clutch before matching RPMs? I usually leave the clutch engaged while it's in neutral. It's there for less than a second.

no, just dont go from third to second with out assising it with some throttle or you tranny will eventually get pissed and your tires also try to lock up a little bit. also you will eat the steering wheel if you are stupid about it.

No, you can do it all in 1 smooth movement. Take it out of 4rth with clutch in, blip the throttle, throw it in 3rd. You don't have to let up on the clutch.

You don't have to let the clutch out, if you do, that is known as double cluthing, and puts less wear on the Snychros. it allows the input shaft of the tranny to be moving faster, when you go find a lower gear, and puts less wear on the synchros, as without letting the clutch out, the input shaft is moving its original speed, and the gear your moving into, forces the input shaft to be moving faster. Just one of the little things that will put less strain on your tranny

but the important thing is to be giving it gas, or have the revs high from a blip of gas, as mentioned earlier, when you let the clutch out in your lower gear, to make it a smoother transition and keep it from feeling like you locked your back tires up.

Oh yeah!! Speaking of all this downshifting business, how many people have fell victim to the dreaded 3-2 shift when attemping an upshift to 4th during performance driving. I know I have and man did it suck. Tires locked up high engine revs. Worst feeling ever!!!! Would an aftermarket shifter help with this? I've really been debating on the pro 5.0. But I really don't have all that many complaints with the stock shifter. I guess I just haven't experienced a nicer shifting car yet. Anyone wanna let me have a go?????
