1998 will be a ls1 as mine, great motors, also 98 is the first year of the newer body style, easy way to tell is look at the intake and it will be a black plastic one instead of metal and it will have coil packs over the valve covers

since you have an auto get a bigger stall to go with your shift kit.

More than likely he liked the body style of the 98-02 model over the lt1 body. That, or the LS God was looking down and guiding him to the greatest chick magnet in his price range

I consider myself a car guy (mainly SBC or Ford Cleveland) but I wasn't completely up to speed on LT1 v. LS1 when I bought my first V8 Camaro several years ago. Unfortunately I liked the LT1 body v. the LS1 body and learned the difference between the two the hard way.

The gas gauge not working is most likely your fuel pump, had the same problem with my old '99 V6 Camaro.

There was a write up somewhere I saw for making a cut out to access the fuel pump without dropping the tank.

Cut an access panel. It is MUCH easier than dropping the tank. Every car should come with one. Grab an air chisel and find a spare piece of sheet metal to cover the hole.
