A lid should probably be your next mod, they are pretty cheap now days. After that exhaust mods, like a cat-back or if you want to go cheaper, get a cutout. Those should provide good gains.

Get SFC's (sub frame connectors) and maybe LCA's (lower control arms) since they can go on at the same time and save you some time.
Get tires.
Get a lid, doesn't really matter what kind you get.
Get an exhaust (don't get flowmaster), or opt for the even cheaper cutout, or electric cutout (quick time performance).
If A4 then Torque Converter.

Those are the basic mods.
ASP Pulley, ported throttle body, all those add ~8hp, but don't cost much either and you can install them yourself.
If you want even more cheap HP, nothing beats nitrous for the money. Headers are also a great mod, especially with nitrous or a new cam.

do all the free mods you can think of, port the TB, adjust the TB bump stop, all the free stuff gives you time to do this and that while your parts are being shipped

ls1howto and ls1university have good write ups. Most won't cost much.

efilive 6.3 is pretty cool will give you a good know-about your car, you might be suprised when you datalog the knock retard and misfire's on all cylinders

Personally, I would see if you can return the SLP MAF and K&N to get your money back. If you absolutely must play with the MAF, get ported ends and remove the screen from the stocker. I have used K&Ns on every performance car I've had, but the flat-panel ones for the LS1/6 suck.
Get an airlid as your next mod followed by some kind of exhaust. The free mods are pretty cool if you don't mind hacking your car up a little (like the airbox).

What JRP said. His post on bolt-ons is great. If you want power, your first mod should be a lid. You can get one brand new for $90, and it gets real horsepower with no downside (unless you claim you can hear the difference in how air gets sucked in. I can't). After that, a catback or a cam would be good. The best advice I can give is come up with a master plan before you monkey around with things. It will save you tons of $$$. Be careful about the free mods. Most are safe, but I've heard some really stupid ones. As for your MAF, it may help you; it may not. Unless you have autotap or do a dyno or 1/4 runs back to back, you'll never really know. I would go back to stock and get the hptuner software instead. Remember, anything you do to your MAF is just trying to trick your computer into a better tune. It might work, but it's really not a good idea.

i found it cheapest do all the mods at once (so they lived in the garage for a while) and get a pro-tune and install.

Loved the horsepower gain when i got my lid, but the first thing i noticed after the install was difference in sound. That sucking noise is awsome . Any body else notice it?

Deffinently go with a lid first.
