New LS engine. LS1 or LS6?
I recently bought a LS engine from a guy on Craigslist. He said he was told it was an LS6 and came out of a 2002 Corvette. Not knowing much about these engines I searched online on how to tell if it was and LS6. I found out that the block was an LS6 but was thrown off by the other parts it came with. The engine looks like it might have come out of a junk yard and some things added to make it ready to drop in. The wiring harness has 2000 Corvette on it and the ECM has 1999 and it also comes with black Corvette engine beauty covers. I looked up my casting numbers and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is refered to as an LS6 or an LS1 and which year(s) it came out of. That would make it much easier in ordering parts.
Engine Block Casting Number: 12561168
Cylinder Head Casting Number: 853
Intake Manifold Casting/Part Number: 1255633
At work I saw a 1999 Corvette with the same heads as mine. I was unable to see the block number. Is my engine from a 1999 Corvette? Are there any serial numbers or VIN stamped on these engines? Thanks for the help.

My 2001 camaro has ls1 heads but ls6 intake and block the way you tell is of you look at the passenger side of the block their should be a flat part and if theirs a circle with a dot its ls1 blok

I think 1/4 the LS1's in 02 used the LS6 block (which is the 12561168 part number), but still used the LS1 intake. The 853 heads are from 99 and 00 LS1's, late 00 and on were 241 heads.
It looks like you have a hodgepodge of parts. Maybe someone bought the block to replace their 99-00 LS1, or maybe someone bought a bare LS6 block and just got what they could find in parts in budget.
I don't think there's a way to find out what the cam or pistons are without getting in there, but I don't know for certain. Might be able to deduce it (or at least deduce what it isn't) on a dyno tune, but I assume it's not ready to run as you're trying to get parts for it.

No there is no difference in Pistons on a ls6 to a LS1 let me solve this before someone ives you the wrong info.
You have a LS1 ENGINE, however in 2002 over 50% of the ls1s were built with the ls6 block, the difference in thee block is a different casting material, and relief valves in the piston walls.
the bottom end is EXACTLY the same, the higher compression in the ls6 comes from the LS6 Heads which you do not have you have LS1 heads
the intake is also a ls6 intake which was standerd on all ls1s starting in 2001.
sorry but you were told wrong you have a ls1, however there really isnt much difference in the engines exept cam and heads, you add a descent cam and you can find 243 heads for cheep and you got cammed ls6

My coworkers say to not worry about it and to just drop the engine in. I think I am going to take the valve covers off and oil pan off just to make sure everything looks ok. I am really thinking about putting a cam in it but I haven't researched which is best for this setup. I also believe I need a new oil pan because the Corvette winged pan will not fit in my A-Body. Are these 853 heads, good heads?

For some reason i thought i read 2000 corvette. But yes ls6 intake ls1 heads from an older ls1 motor, ls6 block but still an ls1..
" and technically an intake from a 2002 camaro is still an ls1 intake since the motor is still an ls1 and factory. It just so happens to also be the ls6 intake as well!! Lol. Like saying we have the 'vette motors'. I got ripped cause i got the trans am motor!! Lol!!!"
