Well, I didn't read the whole thread, just skimmed it, but heads/cam is the way to go. I put down 445 RWHP in October of 2007 with the following.
TSP 5.3L Heads, Stage 2.5
Torquer V3 cam
Ported FAST 90
Stock rocker arms
Stock screened MAF
SLP Lid
Underdrive Pulley
Kooks LT and Catted Y and GMMG.
Stock bottom end w/ factory water pump and A/C.
Stock 10 bolt w/ stock 3.42s.
If I would have ORY and a clutch that could handle the dyno I think I would have hit 450 RWHP. Factory clutch was not liking the dyno. For all "off the shelf" parts minus the minor porting of the FAST 90, I think it did pretty good. With all the new stuff that is out today than wasn't available nearly 5 years ago, like a FAST 102, larger MAFs, larger lids and crazy custom camshafts, hitting 450 shouldn't be too hard. The aftermarket for our cars continues to set the bar higher and higher every year with new products.
With a good selection of parts, proper assembly and a GOOD TUNER you'll be good to go.

I would personally go with a mild H/C combo with bolt-ons to get you in the 400rwhp range and use a nice little 75-100 shot of the happy juice. Decent power immediately on tap and a nice amount more at the flip of a switch.
