Default K&N breather a must for 00-02 lid installs?

I just finished installing my MTI carbon fiber lid, and I know 2000 and up cars have to have some sort of breather? Is this the tube that came out of the back of the driver side air baffle? what exactly does it do? I didn't get the breather, since it was part of a GP, can I just leave it alone? Or do I have to put this thing on it? Is it just a filter? I know I can get the part for 3$ at a hardware store, but I am not sure this is what I need? What exactly do I get for it? Sorry for the dumb newbie questions.

The hose that you are talking about comes from the air pump. All it is, is emmisions crap. The reason why guys but a breather on the end is because instead of it sucking dirty air they put a filter so it can be clean air. It is really not necessary. Hope this helps.

IT IS MOST DEFINITLEY NECESSARY! Without the breather you are sucking dirty air into your motor. Which over a period of time will ruin your cylinder walls. Also not having it has been known to throw SES codes. They're only $15....BUY ONE!

There's a reason why that hose plugs into your OEM airbox behind the air filter... just to avoid dirty air getting into things. If your new air lid doesn't have a hole for the hose (my SLP lid did have a hole built in) then yes, get the filter.

Say you removed AIR, couldn't you just plug the LID side of the hole?

I'm no expert but I was under the impression that the air pump only pumped air into the exhaust when the engine was cold to help with emisions. I did not think it pumped any air into the engine. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I just used the K&N filter cause I ordered it with my lid but I don't think you need the K&N one. There are other breather type filters that will be cheaper.

You don't have to spend the $15-20 on the K&N breather. If yo ugo down to your local Autozone/Pepboys/VIP you can find the APC version in the "rice" section for $8. Thye come in all different colors and work/fit just as good as the K&N.

The air pump, pumps air into the exhaust, not the engine itself.

K&N Performance Parts Racing & Off-Road Air Filter (part# 62-1030). I bought my air lid from LS1 Motorsports/Quartermile Performance back in 2001, and the filter came with the lid.

I tried to find a picture of it on some of the sites and even K&N's site, but no luck. Anyone have a pic for me so I know what im looking for? Thanks for you help.

Red91Vette: I have a nice shiny filter for you if you don't mind waiting for shipping. It's one of the $15 ones. I'll sell it to ya cheap if you want. benjaminr@hotmail.com

Click the link for a pic, you can see it on the right. Not really as gay as it gets like some people seem to think.

Well I just picked up a cheap foam one for 2.50$, I tucked it outta sight too so you can't really see it anyway. I don't think 98 or 99 LS1's have it.
