Starting to Mod, Suggestions?
Hey guys, I purchased a '98 Z28 in June or so, and right now it's currently getting painted/front bumper holes getting filled.
However, when I get it back I want to start to modify it. Right now, it's bone stock has a manual tranny, 167k on the clock. It runs solid and everything so I'm not too worried about the miles.
My mod list was as follows: LT, lid, 9 inch, short shifter, and a cam. I'm having a lot of troubles figuring out what kind of cam I want, I've read through a bunch of threads and what not. I've looked at cam packages from Advanced Induction and also Thunder Racing. Can anyone help me out?
I was also thinking about HID's, people on here say to change the housing for them, but what housing do I use? I was going to get the kits from DDM, but can someone help me out here? How does the mod list sound so far?

You're on the right path now you need to get to specifics....A 9" rearend is a good mod, but with street tires it's a worthless mod in my opinion. What goals are you looking for as far as a cam? If you decide to go with a somewhat larger cam you will need to get 4.10+ gears which will hurt your MPGs a little bit. You should look into doing a nice bolt on setup first and see how you like it then start to figure out what cam you want when you decide what type of racing you're going to do. Also another good question and probably the most important question is what is your budget? lol

I'm looking a medium cam, mid 220's on the specs or so. For the rearend that's going to be the first thing i buy because I already feel like it's going to bust on me haha. My budget is pretty flexible I'm going to be living at home and working, going to community college so the only expenses I'll have is car parts. What kind of tires would you recommend in the back then? Also during all the work myself so that won't cost anything.

This is what I would do in order...
First : Longtubes, ORY, Catback, Lid, MAF, Shocks/Springs, Subframe connectors
Second : Cam (224/228), PRC stage 2.5 5.3 heads, Valve springs, hardened pushrods, LS7 lifters, Injectors, Fuel pump, Throttle body, LS6 intake manifold, MT ET streets, tune
Third : Spec stage 3 clutch, 9" rear w/ 3.73 (if auto) 4.10s (if M6), Torque arm, panhard bar, Driveshaft, Tick master cylinder, MGW shifter. (*note replace any of these items if they break sooner than the others on the list).
Fourth : Work on some weight reduction.. Front suspension and some lower control arms.
I think if you go somewhat off that list you will be very please, but you should know all of this will not be cheap.

A lot of people are actually still using stock springs/shocks, and a good trick a lot of Fbody guys use are replaced their factory rear springs with V6 springs, the car will transfer harder.

Do you Daily drive the car? If so the MT ET streets are not a great idea. If you have ever tried to drive in the rain on street slicks you will understand. If not, it is not an experience I would reccomend. It can get real hairy real fast. Even if you are taking it easy. I have snapped a 10 bolt on street tires and would highly recommend a 9". I am ordering one from Midwest Chasis. They are a sponsor on here and offer a nice deal on a fabbed one. As far as the rest I agree with the other guy. I would go for full bolt ons and then do the cam and all. As far as heads I would check out what Texas Speed and Performance offers. They offer a wide selection and will answer any questions. They will also custom grind a camshaft. Just a few suggestions. I am on my 3rd Fbody. WARNING!!! It gets addicting!!

This is my third f body as well, owned two 1994 Z's before this. But definitely want the 9inch as a close to first mod, I can just feel how weak it is. It will be mainly a DD, what tires would you recommend? I checked out Texas Speed as well, they seemed pretty good, have to check out Midwest Chasis.

MAF = Mass Air Flow, you can get an 85mm off of a truck and it will cost you about $100 or buy one from SLP that is $180. And you can run MT ET streets on the street in the rain, I have done is numerous times....just don't be a dumbass lol and don't swurve in and out of traffic.

Easily the best mod Ive done to my car and IMO the best mod you can do to these.
