Lasting till 118k miles, with some mods, some dyno time (plus no telling how much WOT time), and 365rwhp.....is "breaking all the time". LOL. I don't know where some people get their expectations from.

To the OP:
4L60E is a fine trans for a stock to stockish car. And they can be built to handle plenty of power. Don't expect any auto trans to last forever on a car that's driven hard though. If you've got 100k miles or more on your stock trans, and then start rasing shift points and adding power, you can expect to need a rebuild sooner rather than later. This is not because the trans is junk, this is because you are pushing old parts well past their design limit. Upgrade the internals as part of the rebuild and you should get a lot of life from it (assuming your builder is good).

Most guys that are running heavily modified set ups don't bother with the extra 5HP you get from a CAI over a lid. CAI's are so much more expensive. Just get the lid.

The only thing I really felt I gained with an aftermarket lid over the factory airbox was a cleaner, smaller looking setup. I personally didn't "feel" much of a difference. Every little bit helps though. I've got bbk headers/y pipe and it's a pretty nice setup for 400-500 dollars. Keep your stock catback and put a cutout in the I-pipe and you can have a full exhaust setup on the cheap.

Aftermarket lids have a dyno proven average gain of 10rwhp. Just about every LS1 F-body that has had a lid installed has dyoned 7-13rwhp higher afterwards (hence the 10rwhp average gain to be expected).
Most people won't really "feel" a gain that small, but you can expect about .5-1mph gain at the track.

I'm probably wrong and someone will probably correct me. But it basically bypasses all your pipes and mufflers and directly pours the exhaust out before it goes into the pipes.
When you bypass all your pipes and especially your muffler, your car will be very loud. But that's also the best flowing system you can get, 0 restriction.

A cutout can be installed anywhere that you can fit it, but the most common place on a stock exhaust car would be in the I-pipe. The purpose is to bypass the muffler and tail pipes, as said above.
Sometimes people with LT headers will install two cutouts (one right after each header, just before the Y-pipe). At that point it's like having open headers when you open the cutouts.

Yep, I know the car is quicker than before. Just not a noticeable feel. I'll take it for a relatively cheap mod.
^This. The sooner you bypass it, the less restrictive it will be. Will you notice it by placing the cutout 2 feet closer to the engine? No, but like I've said every bit helps.

I also have a 1998 trans am with the L460E
unfortuantly i dont have a shift kit
paid $1500 for a rebuild w/ shift kit that was supposed to handle up to 500 horses when i got it back in the car i could tell instantly![Ripped](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/smilies3/ripped.gif)
was shifting like stock. even stock i can usually get it to chirp into second if i try.
personally the only problem i had with my tranny is when i had a new motor put in it. about 3 days later i ended up pushing the car home because the trans went out in the middle of a busy intersection. other than that since this new one which im begining to this i paid $1500 for a stock rebuild is fine for not untill i get more mods going on.
gears in the near future

Put a trans cooler and that will help it last a little longer. I also have a cut-out and love the way it sounds. The car feels like it pulls more at hwy speeds.
