Default Piston Slap

Okay I went to look at a Ls1 yesterday and the guy who owns it said it has roughly around 48k, he started it up and informed me of piston slap. Never really heard it before. So is this a bad thing? And how hard is it to fix this?

its not a bad thing, 90% of them do it my b rand new ls6 crate motor does it and my ls1 did it. its just a by product of the generous tolerances and short piston skirts in the ls motors. if it went away then all is good and go ahead with the deal on the car

There is nothing to fix, it just is what it is. Like said above, it's a normal thing for these engines, and it seems to effect the '01+ engines moreso than the older ones (my '98 doesn't slap at all, and neither did my '99 or '00). My '02 has slapped it's whole life (102k miles) and it's never gotten any better nor worse, and it hasn't caused any problems and doesn't burn any oil, etc. It goes away when it's hot out in the summer, but in the cold winter temps it pretty much slaps all the time at idle, even after the engine is warm. No big deal to me really.

Yup I was scared when I first heard it. Sounds like a diesel. But it's nothing to fear

Mine does it too.

It's done it since I bought the car with 65k on it, I now have almost 118k on it and it's gotten no worse. Like RPM WS6 said, on hot days it's hardly there, if at all, but in the winter on cold starts it'll do it for a few minutes till the car starts to heat up. I just go easy on it (as you should do with a cold engine anyway) till the sewing machine noise stops, then drive it normally.

On warm or hot starts it doesn't do it at all.

My 02 slapped brand new right off the dealer lot. Nothing to worry about.
