My fuel pump went out so I went along and did the trap door to my surprise as I was done and lifted the piece I had cut the pump was no where to be found this sucks! Now I have a bigger door then I would've had had I known the tank had been switched who knows why it was switched!!

So why didn't you do this repair the proper way and drop the gas tank???
It really isn't any more effort and you don't have a hacked up floor. Plus I'd be awfully afraid of cutting through the floor AND the gas tank with a plasma torch, thus blowing myself up from gas vapors.

I dropped the tank in my 98. Wasn't too bad. We had some troubles wrestling the tank filler neck out and in, but it all ended up working out. I wasn't too keen on cutting up my floor and figured if I was going to change the pump/regulator, might as well do it right.

I would not drop the tank again. GM should have put an access door for this, I would see it as correcting a factory mistake. For those of us that don't have a lift, this method is MUCH easier than dropping the tank, and once the panel is cut then future replacements are even easier still. Dropping the tank even with a lift is a pain in the *** IMO.
Who uses a torch for this? The floor is thin, you can drill shallow access holes and cut the rest with tin snips even.
Add a patch panel when done, sealed with some short sheet metal screws and silicone or rope caulk, cover it back up with the carpet and forget about it.
