Disagree, my car regularly averages 20 mpg. Last fill-up was 21.5 mpg. This is with mostly highway driving, but it's not bad all things considered. It's going to be hard to find another car with 350 hp stock and gets the same mileage.

These cars, especially with an automatic, are a poor choice if you want stellar MPG in city situations. Sure, an M6 on the expressway can get 27-30mpg, but nothing like that is ever going to happen in city traffic with an A4. Ever. If you want that kind of mileage in a crowded city, you'll need a lighter car with a smaller engine.

And with 70% highway driving 30% city driving I average 20-21MPG. All highway is 27, all city is 16.

For a V8 and the power they get, these cars do exceptionally well. I have a friend with a 2001 Mustang GT who asked my highway mileage, and I told him I get 26-27 if it's all highway. He called BS on it and said he only gets 21 or 22 in his 5 speed 2v GT. Some of it is probably due to the lower gearing on my car, having 2.73's, but I think the rest is the LSX line of engines.

The old 2v Mustang GT was just an all around horrible engine in performance and fuel economy, its best aspect was its sound, still one of my favorite sounding V8's out there.

You need to do a tune up. Plugs, wires, fuel filter and a new air filter are due. I would SeaFoam it and hit it with injector cleaner first. believe it of not a Lid and catback will help with the MPG as well as make power, so you may want to look at geting those.

Depending on where you live you might not have the same gas that everyone here is running as well, and that will effect if you ever even get what these people are talking about. Make sure the car is in good running order, get a tuner in your area to make sure the car has all the right things setup and call it good. My stock Ls 98 a4 used to get about 16- My cammed M6 98 would get 30 +.
I knew nothing about cars when I had the a4 originally, I was tuning 5 cars a week when I had the cam m6, and not living in the same area.
20mpg is not good. lol.

Depends on the type of driving and trans type. 20mpg would be outstanding for city driving with one of these cars, and about normal for mixed driving with an automatic. I can tell you first hand, they didn't get 20mpg in big city traffic even when they were brand new (A4). For those of you able to get 100% gas, your numbers will be better. For me, E10 is my only option, and my numbers are based on that.
