Default What should I do first? New LS1 owner.

So i just purchased a 2004 c5 corvette. My buddy has a stock ls1 2002 camaro and we raced. He had me up to 110 by 2 cars! We are both stock. I know I have 273 gears maybe that had something to do with it. Is this normal? What upgrades should I do first? I have about a 2000.00 budget. Any advice much appreciated by this NOOB.

dang. his was stock too? i dont know a ton about vettes but I wouldve expected a slight lead with the c5. id start with exhaust then throw a sick idling cam in. im sure someone else will have some advice though you may want to try the corvette forum for some specifics.

Something isn't right. Stock for stock, you should have had him. Both autos?

I agree, that's why I recommend he check everything and maybe do a tune up.

I know anything can happen on the street and there are tons of variables but typically speaking he shouldn't have lost.

yeah we are both automatic transmissions. I was a little shocked thought i would have pulled him by a couple cars honestly. would gears make a huge difference?

SOTP a 3.73 will put a big ol' grin on your face. But IIRC (mind you I'm a six speed guy) I read where some people have seen no gain from going from a 3.23 to a 3.73 at the track.

i have no idea what you have right now though.

Gears really make the car feel different when your driving. 3.42 to 4.10 was a night and day difference for me.

Do some bolt ons and a tune and your tuner can enhance your transmission a bit to really make a difference in the way the car pulls.

a good mail order tune from frost mite help.next would be a good exhaust and ported TB and a tune.look into a good converter if you don't mind the work to replace it.consider a 224 cam from thunder racing or Texas Speed for $600.get the cams at 114 lsa to maybe work with a stock converter.

This is pretty much exactly what I would do in your shoes, great post Gary.

Yes, but you can do the free ram air mod on F-bodies though:

Kinda confused. You replied no to his question then went on to say he can do the ram air mod as if it was an alternative to the zip tie mod. Did you mean to say yes the zip tie mod is only for vettes? I'd really like to do it on my formula if it's doable.

i found out i have the factory 273 gear ratio.. so i was thinking a switch to 342 ratio and toss on a vararam to start and see what happens.. hoping that would be good for a half second or more off my quarter mile plus good pulling power from a roll type race scenario.

Skip the bolt ons, go for heads and cam. Then get the tune.

Don't worry about your gears right now. Stock for stock you should win, your Vette should weigh about 200 lbs less, otherwise the power between both cars is completely the same.

Get an intake, a lid, just about any kind will do. That's about 5-7HP there and for only $80-$90. P&P throttle body is a cheap mod too, $50-$90 for that and you can pick up 5HP from that. Exhaust system is a few hundred bucks and that's another 5-10HP. Those 3 mods would be $400-$600 and at least 15-20HP. Then you could get a good set of long tube headers and a tune, add another 20WHP there. For a little over $1,000 you could add well over 30WHP.

1. Intake
2. Exhaust
3. P&P TB
4. Headers
5. Tune

You gotta remember the 02 fbodies had the ls6 intake(idk if vettes do to), and the camaro's suspension is a little better for racing compared to the vettes leaf springs. Also if you have 2.73s, the camaro might have 3.23's. That could explain the outcome.
