I'm very happy with my stock (minus k&n filter). Ran 13.8@102 in my auto 98 t/a that's kinda heavy.2.73 gears even. I'm maybe half a second behind a friends 04 gt with head work and cam, full exhaust, 4.10's, etc car. My car has no low end and good top end. Gears, muffler. Tune, stall would put me in the 12's easy and run with new 5.0 cars and beat new 400hp auto camaros. Not bad for 15yr old car imho. Even beat a 3v stang on the street.

You can take a 16 second four banger with a manual and put a loud exhaust on it and have someone slam the gears and it will feel like you have an insanely fast car, when in reality it runs 16s. How much it throws you back in your seat isn't a good judgement of power

When i got my ride it was completely stock, and even tho i got it in bad shape, i knew it had so much potential. Just needed some TLC. To me, it seem to be a quick car, even tho i only was able to pull a 13.7 in the 1/4 on street tires.
Lots of rides out there are faster than a stock LS1, but it takes so little to make good performance out of them.
Dont be dissapointed... Be happy you have one of the easiest rides you can modify, and get the best bang for your buck!

When I first bought my car it felt quick but I swore my old lt1 would have kicked its ***. First time I raced it DA was 3200' and I came home with 13.4-13.6 passes trapping 104-105mph. It wasn't until I caught a good night at the track with it that I pulled low 13s and 107-108 traps. It felt slow then and now that's it's modded it still feels slow... Honestly the car pulls better numbers than you would think because it feels so meh. I've always heard its the linear torque/power curve that causes it.

Kind of felt the same way about my 99 until i opened up the exhaust and intake a little bit. Pace setter hearders with duel 2 1/2 pipes all the way back with a raptor hood and lid made a huge difference to me. The car pulled a lot harder on the top end and also seemed to respond faster. This was a A4 car with only 3.23 gears.
With that being said you can notice the diffrence from 3.23 and 3.42 gears in the A4 cars with out question. My 2000 with only a LM cat back and lid and (3.42 gears) felt just as fast as the 99 with full exhaust, true suncoast ram air intake and hood, and (3.23 gears).

As stated before, a stall converter will make a world of difference. It should be the first mod for any enthusiast's auto car.
I agree with several of the posts about the butt-dyno. Track times are a real-world gauge of performance. When I was car shopping a few years back, I drove a new Z06 and was quite disappointed. It felt sluggish and there wasn't that neck snapping power I was used to (had a build Camaro at home). It's deceiving because the power band is smooth and not "kicking in" at a set RPM.
Don't give up on the LS platform simply because the butt-dyno isn't making the numbers you expected.

Thanks for the many replies. I went back and forth on whether something was wrong with the car not and the clatter still freaks me out sometimes, but I think the deceptive, smooth power delivery is why I feel this way. It certainly doesn't help that my daily driver is now a turbo Acura, very peaky. I've been enjoying the T/A a bit more since I got my GMMG exhaust and there's always more mods to come. I would never have given up anyhow.

When I first test drove my A4 LS1/2.73 car it felt sluggish compared to my previous LT1/3.23 cars. The stock tune also had the converter lock up way too early, increasing the perception of sluggishness. But I could feel the power coming on around 4500rpm in way that no stock LT1 could.
Right away I knew this car would need gears and I bought it with the intention of doing that ASAP. Then tranny tuning and the addition of a hi-stall converter completely transformed the way it felt.

Me personally, NO. I am not dissapointed.
My first car, (which I still own) is my 87 Cutlass Supreme, has about 140hp to the crank I believe. Thing weighs almost 2 tons and is just heavy overall.
Speedo also maxes at 85mph.
So my next car (99 WS6) was a HUGE improvement.

i have driven several buddies F-bodies at the track...compared to my NA mustang they felt slower but the timeslips showed the LS1's were a bit quicker...i think its the seating position that makes it feel slower but time slips dont usually lie..
now im building a turbo LS for my mustang....what does that tell ya? lol

Here is our current project G-body ('83 Cutlass) on a scale:
As you can see in the image, at 3,340lbs it's lighter than even a 4th gen. The only items removed from this car were the carpet padding and the entire A/C system. However, a some weight was added in the way of a 455ci engine, TH350 trans and 8.5" rear.
The problem with these cars is not the weight at all, it's the underpowered 307ci, but that can be fixed with a 455 swap.

I personally love the performance feel of my WS6 and the LS1 in general.
My WS6 is modded now, but I have driven many a stock LS1 (vettes, fbodys) and think that they pull great in stock form. And once you start throwin mods at them, the sky is the limit.
FWIW: When the ls1 came out in the late 90's, the cars it powered were regularly running low 13s in the 1/4. With the exception of modern supercars, the performance of the 15 yr old ls1 is still on par with many of todays current performance vehicles.
