Default 98 T/A cheap mods

I have a 98trans am and have a great opportunity at some cheap small block parts, I have the availability of a set of lq4 heads out of a express van, and a brand new 6.2 cam, is it worth putting these parts on my ls1? If so which ones, and if the heads is it worth getting those heads machined or what else, the car is factory except I think a higher performance clutch and a slp performance loudmouth exhaust, my quickest time at the midnight drags here in Salt Lake is a 14.20, any input is greatly appreciated

I wouldn't use any parts. If you haven't already I would shop around for a set of longtubes and a good y pipe. I would also get a ls6 intake to complement the exhaust. As for cam and head packages I would give Texas Speed or Martin at Tick Performance a call. Both are very helpful and can set you up with everything you need and find a setup that matches your budget and goals.

I would do a 228r cam or a spec'd cam from Martin from Tick (sponsor on here) LS6 intake, long tube headers, TSP true duals, and some heads recommended by Martin with that cam choice.

ok cool cool, or is it worth refreshing this lq4 block and running it in the t/a? is it too heavy? would I use the lq4 heads with it? or my ls1 heads? what else different would I need if I went the lq4 6.0 route, would it be worth boring it also? I know you can't bore the ls1, I guess what I'm getting at is the extra weight worth the potential power gains

I will put it simple to you. You can stroke a LS1 for bigger cubes. Yes the LQ4 will be alot heavier since its a iron block, but if you boost that LQ4, it will makeover for the weight with the big power gains from boosting it. If you are concerned about weight then the LQ4 isnt your choice UNLESS you boost it.

My buddy has a stock bottom end lq4 with H/C/I and it screams! I would stick with the 6.0l personally because you can run ls3 heads on it.

Weigh out the cost, depends what you want to do. If the motor in your car runs fine and has a reasonable amount of miles there would be no reason to take it out. If it is at the end of its life and ready for a rebuild I would rebuild the LQ4. The ls1 can be taken out to a 3.905 bore and that is it. Depending on what you want for the car is up to you but if they both needed to be rebuild I would go the 6.0. Its not much more weight and you really wont notice it unless its a road race car.

Thank you 2000 pewterta good insight, my ls1 is ay 165000 miles and as far as I know never been overhauled it does still run really good however so I'm not sure what to do, now here's more questions, if I do decide to overhaul the lq4 engine is it better to use those heads or should I use the ls1 heads? I/m assuming everything will bolt up terrific, should I get different injectors for the 6.0 or stick with stock ls1? So many queations
