So what exactly is a Formula?

I'm with MasterTomos. He's gone to great lengths to give you a very accurate and detailed explanation of how the Pontiac Firebird is broken down, but the quote above sums it up very well.
Whether you have a badge on the car or not, the Title for your Pontiac Firebird Trans Am says it is a Firebird. (As does the title for your Dodge Challenger.) That is the car you have.
The only difference in Sway Bars & Springs came with the WS6 Package which was available on both the Firebird Formula & Firebird Trans Am. (This is true at least thru the year 2000. In 2001 & 2002 the WS6 Package was only available for the Firebird Trans Am.)
Your quote below shows you have a pretty good grasp on the subject.

And I've only debated this as much as i have because according to the vin code the car is a formula (v8 car) then down the assembly line it gained the y-82 code for the trans am appearances instead of w66 for formula appearances.
But it really doesn't matter anyway

Thanks for clearing up the sway bar/spring setup.

As for the Swaybars/springs, The WS6's just got an upgraded front sway bar (32mm instead of 30mm-whoohoo lol) and had optional Bilstein shocks (which a mass majority of them didn't have). Besides that, it's just the hood, air box, different exhaust tips, 17" wheels, a (terrible) power steering cooler, and the badge, oh, and about a 50% increase in the asking price
Firehawks need their own thread for the differences, but also had upgraded front sway bars, optional springs, and optional shocks, in short.

Remember though, there were also Formula Firehawks that were not Trans Ams.

There were no optional Bilstein shocks on LS1 WS6 cars. Suspension upgrades such as this were only optional on the SLP cars (SS and Firehawk). The conversion contractor for LS1 WS6s was ASC, which did not offer any of the SLP upgrades that were optional on SS/Firehawk.

Also, just a side note, The Firehawk Package wasn't even originally on Trans am's. From 1992-1995 (maybe '96 not sure) the firehawk package wasn't even an option for a Trans am at all, only the formulas.

1995 was the first year for Comp T/A (which was the 25th anniversary for the BFG Comp T/A tire line and thus the reason for the package). No Comp T/A package in earlier years.
