Default Help me find a cam/head package.

I am looking for a package that will put me over the 400rwhp mark but not discourage a weekend cruiser. I go to the track and this car isn't my daily driver. I dont want a super aggressive cam, but I like a good lope. I have read some on ticks v2 cam. Heads, what about cnc'd 243s? springs, rocker arms, pushrods? what else is needed?
And as far as intake I beleive ls6 should be fine?

What I would really recommend doing is calling some of the sponsors and seeing what they recommend as far as a heads/cam setup goes. There are plenty of good sponsor that would be more than willing to help you out and that could provide you with some good recommendations. A few that come to mind are Texas Speed, Brian Tooley Racing, and Tick Performance. There are definitely others these are just some of them that come to mind.

Well its all about how much you want to spend, how much power, etc...that differs from person to person. Like mentioned above, check out some the sponsors on here

a few streetable cams will make 400rwhp with stock 243 heads .a valve job is recommended .check Tick ,Texas Speed ,and vengeance racing to list just a few venders to call.stock rockers with comp trunnion bearings will work.if you buy heads the can be bought with the springs needed to work with the cam you choose .if your block and heads aren't milled ,and you use the right head gasket ,a 7.4 push rod should work .I would measure to make sure .the better flowing the head ,the mellower the cam needed to meet your goals .you mite need a fuel system upgrade if you make 420 rwhp or more .

What engine exactly and what heads do you have already? 400whp is a pretty attainable goal to reach within your budget.

ls1, its a 2000 firebird formula. Mods now are slp lid, ported/descreened MAF, egr delete, pacesetter LTs dual exhaust 2.5", m6..

With $3500 being the ceiling, I would go with something like below:
LS6 intake or FAST if you can afford
Ported 243/799 heads or O-T-S PRC Head package from Texas Speed or similar
Custom ground cam for your goals and to maximize area under the curve
BTR Valvesprings
LS2 Timing kit
Good oil pump (Katech, Melling, Ported LS6, etc.)
Brian Tooley Racing SLR Lifters
Hardened pushrods

For 400+whp, good driveability on a budget. CNC ported 5.3L or 243 heads, high 220s to low 230s intake / low 230s to mid 230s exhaust duration, .600-.630 intake / ~.600 exhaust lift, 111-112 lsa cam. Will not have to flycut stock pistons as long as head combustion chambers are no less than 62cc. But still always meassure piston-to-valve clearance regardless. I'd contact Bullet Racing cams or Brian Tooley Racing for cam to stay away from the super aggressive rape rate lopes. LS6 intake manifold and stock throttle body will easily make 400+whp. Brian Tooley Racing .650 or .660 platinum dual springs, hardened pushrods, stock rockers with Compcams trunion upgrade, 85mm GM MAF, 42lb/hr injectors, at least about 225lph fuel pump, at least a LS2 timing chain, at least a ported LS6 oil pump, replace lifters. And don't forget the clutch replacement. 400whp will obliterate even a brand new stock LS1 clutch in no time.

If doing all the work yourself, $3500 max will be tight when its all said and done.

Give us a shout, Martin loves putting together head/cam packages and they always seem to have eye-popping results. We can work around (almost) any budget.

The best advice I can give you is to really search on here on what heads/cam/intake combos people are running. You can find out things like how my power did it put down, what ET's it's ran, how streetable it is, how it sounds, etc. There are plenty of top notch vendors on here that would be more than happy to help you meet your goals, and do so as cheap as possible. Customer service is a big thing with me, and all I can say is Tick Performance's customer service is next to none. Brian Tooley's customer service is also top notch. One important thing to remember is make sure you find a good tuner. All the best parts in the world don't mean anything unless you've got a reputable/experienced tuner to apply their skills to put the power down safely.

Yes, that will need to be replaced in short time with 400+whp. Even upgrading to an LS7 clutch (which is probably the least expensive clutch out there that will handle 400whp with easy) actually costs around $750-800 in parts alone when doing a clutch swap the right way. Includes replacing the slave, master, bearings, bolts, fluid, speed-bleader (can't imagine not installing one if you don't already). Just FYI if not already considered.
