How do I know what parts I can use?

How do I know what parts I can use? I see people with Ls1's Ls2's, LQ4's, etc, and when giving a parts list they'll mention they have ls7 lifters, ls9 gaskets, etc, I'm wondering those parts will work on any LS engine? Or do you have to a modification, or other supporting mods? Newbie question I'm sure
