fwiw a properly setup fbody w/ a capable driver can & will beat up on awd vehicles, dragstrip, autox, roadcourse, whatever... njspder had a 92 RS 305 tbi car with bolt ons & properly setup suspension w/ weight reduction & would weekly finish 1-2 or 3 in a class that consists of 400hp awd cars...there were cars with probably 150hp advantage over him but hed consistantly be within just fractions of a second of them.

"handling" is something that guys with slower cars like to talk about. Go to all the rice forums and you'll see all kinds of that crap. Unless you street race in traffic circle, horsepower/torque is king.

You guys are comparing apples and oranges, so I don't really see how either side of the argument could hold water. I know that I sold my Cobra, and bought an EVO because it had 4 doors and was more practical. It had the best combination of performance and praticality for the money, in a NEW car. A stock LS1, and a stock EVO or STI arn't all that far apart in performance. Although an LS1 has FAR more potential for power. My buddy has an SS and I think it is pimp, but whenever we go out and take the women with us guess who has to drive!?

But as far as performance goes, the Vishnu shop EVO just placed 5th overall in the One Lap Of America race. Against some factory backed big boys, like Dodge Vipers and Porsches. That's a pretty good accomplishment. Check it out.....

If you want to compair the 2 cars, compair the price as well. Z28 (new) ~24k sticker with the common options.

1998 camaro z28 base $20,470.00
Subaru sti base 30,995

Difference = 10525 .
Now, for 10K in suspension, wheels, tires, some minor engine bolt ons, and a set of tank tread for winter, and pontoons for when it rains, you have a car that takes the sti in every aspect except for "pinkness" :-) and you can still take the wife out to dinner to make up for all the garage time.

Most of those trucks and others were crazy modified, and had endless factory budgets.

yah but add $1000 a year to that base sticker and your talking 27-29k if it were out today. I love my camaro but dont compare 98 new to 04 new price...inflation comes into play.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious. That's basically restating the same thing I said. Two completely different cars, two different price ranges, two different target audiences, two different intended purposes.

So why does the comparison continue of two cars that are completely different? Especially if you hate "rice" so much, why continue talking about it?

Very good point actually.

Has anyone run one of those new vettes yet? Just curious how much faster they are.

1998 z28 = 20,470
2000 z28 = 21,400
2002 z28 = 22,700
2004 z28 based on that is ~24k . Which leaves 7K for suspension upgrades, which we can brake down a little bit just to show its feasable,

$1500 gets you adjustable coil overs, your choice of springs, and adjustable shocks, sway bars
$1500 gets you zr1 knock off's and your choice of wide tires

$2000 gets you all the other suspension goodies you would want, contol arms (all)panhard rod, whatever

That leaves $2000 , and the prices above are pretty high too

So with your $2000, you can spend $600 at tire rack for some snow tires on stealies(I know, winter driving will never match the scooby's but it will be somewhat drivable) = $1400

$1300 for some nice stainless headers and a lid

leaves $100 to take the wifey to dinner

That actually only leaves you $4k, EVO MSRP is only $28K. And the RS which has better performance stats is around $26K which leaves you even less.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...2_first_mitsu/

Kinda funny though that in the link of the second post on this thread that; Motortrend comparing the STI and EVO showed the EVO at a 13.08 1/4 mile and this link shows it at a 13.5 1/4 mile. The second is probably more accurate, although I think Mitsubishi put it at 13.2.

Splitting hairs, with inconsistent information from Mototrend.

Cause I used to have a camaro, my best friend has one and we work on it together. I like cars, of all kinds.

A better question would be:
Why are you speding so much time discussing something you hate so much?

I think that it is useless, stock they are very comparable performance wise. And if you add this and I add that, and back and forth, who ever has the most money will win in the end. So its a useless argument.

$4k, Fine, then just do suspension and wheels, and stay a little slower in the 1/4 :-) . You get my point, I think the sti and evo are cool cars. Not for me, but for their niche they are great. I think the sti needs a radio, and lose the pink stuff. The evo is a much better deal than the sti, however I like the adjustable center diff in the sti. The RS is a neat idea, but it has 0 creature comforts, and I don't really think qualifies as any normal person's daily driver. I could go on all day, I am an LS1 nut surounded by subaru freaks, hell I leave with a subaru US executive's Son, and we get into it daily. When it comes down to it though, he has the 2.5 real slow, so there really isn't much to talk about between us.

I don't hate them man..Just wondering about the thread! I like all sorts of cars too, I have to give people a hard time about "rice"...sorry!

I also have to tell you that I would be pissed if I got spanked by a EVO, or Evolution.
