Default Help with A.I.R. Removal

Hello everyone. I have searched and searched, and the only threads I am able to find on this topic are very dated, and none of the pictures are working any longer.

As some may know, my girlfriend has an 02 CETA that we are trying to get running right. That said, I noticed a bunch of enormous hoses running to nowhere in the engine bay. The other night while changing the coil packs, I noticed those hoses running to something bolted to the driver's side coil pack bracket.

As far as I know, this is the A.I.R. system. From what I have read, it is only beneficial to cars with cats. This car has long-tubes and no cats. Can I remove this unit and it's conglomeration of hoses without harm? My guess is that it is already shut off in the tune, but we will be tuning in the next few weeks regardless.

And correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I can tell I just unbolt the brackets, pull the hoses out, and then pull the pump unit from behind the driver's headlight.

Is there anything special I need for this, or is it just unbolting and capping some vacuum ports on the intake?

Here are some pics. If you see anything that needs addressing immediately (I am throwing lean codes/random miss codes, trying to sort those out) - please say so.

Sorry this one is a little blurry. This is on the driver's side, on top of the rear coils.

Is this the A.I.R. system?

This hose runs behind the intake manifold, and just stops here on the passenger side. Is it related as well?

Sorry if these questions seem ridiculous. I am very new to the LS platform. And, if this is just wasted space and ugliness, it needs to go.

Thanks.

yes the large ~3/4 in diameter hose and distribution valve block is for the air system. Getting the pump out from behind the headlamp was frustrating, hidden bolts under the fender skirt as I recall.
if its not hooked up as is you likely already have a car that's tuned out as you said. note that the SLP lid has a large diameter hole for that AIR system clean air intake on the drivers side you will want to make sure is plugged as well (spare pcv valve fit easy for me).

I am also getting ready to remove this stuff. I started getting a light and code and I think the pump stopped working. Not going to fix it.

My question: Second picture down, the distribution valve block, what needs to be done when I remove this? Just plug the vacuum line going into the top? Or something else?

I am just gathering parts right now. I have the blocking plates for the exhaust manifolds and the plug for the side of my SLP lid on the way. Looks pretty straight forward but I can't really see the back of the engine well. Is that vacuum line the only one?

I am hoping to take a look at it this weekend and grab some good pics of the whole deal. I noticed that hole in the SLP lid immediately after purchasing the car. I plugged it up right away.

Alright so I got started removing the A.I.R. system. Be advised this is not a complete write-up because it was already disabled and the system was no longer completely connected. This is just to provide some insight into taking the module off. Once I get to the piece behind the bumper I will post up about that.

Anyhow, here is how I did it:

This is the ugly unit we want to remove.

Step one, disconnect the electrical plug seen here.

Remove this 10mm nut. It is attached to the rear coil pack on the driver’s side, and holds down the bracket keeping the AIR system in place.

If you remove the bolt on the side where the electrical plug went in, the bracket holding that plug slides out of the main bracket easily:

The next step (arguably one of the hardest) – is to loosen the nut on the back of the head, holding the main bracket in place. It is held by a 15mm nut. Luckily, the bracket is one that will slip out with the nut being loosened only, so you will loosen it, remove the bracket, then tighten the nut back up. I used a ratcheting wrench for this, once I found the right size, it honestly was not that bad.

This was very difficult to take a picture of, but here you can see the bracket and the nut on the back of the head.

If you remove the brake booster hose and move it out of the way, it is much easier to access the nut.

In this picture, my fingers are touching the nut on the back of the head.

This is the bracket removed.

Remove the large hoses that are routed around the bay, and pull off the small vacuum hoses.

Put this system where it belongs.

The small vacuum lines that run behind the intake can be removed. There is a three way tee. Remove the vacuum associated with the AIR system. There is one hose that is wrapped in loom that goes forward. Place this hose onto the barb on the rear of the intake below the map sensor. The barb faces the passenger side and is difficult to see with an inspection mirror, but it can be felt.

If this is not done, your air conditioner will default to defrost only.

I will post up the rest of the process when I get around to it!

Sure thing man! I just knew there were no good pictures up still because all of the write ups are so old. I will still finish it up once I get to the rest!

I have an LS6 manifold, so I am not sure if you will encounter any differences.

I know. I mentioned I have not had a chance to get there yet. I will post up about that when the time comes.

No problem, all 2002s have the LS6 manifold. And yes, I did a search and found great write-ups of how to do this, all with pictures that don't work anymore. This is great.

I didn't pay attention to you having an 02. Whoops! Hopefully this weekend we can get the rest of it out. Have some other maintenance things to address while we are there.
