Default Need help about buying an ls1

So i have a 94 lt1 sitting and needs work thats my project car but i just came across someone whose selling a mint condition stock 2000 ls1 trans am (original owner) for 4,000 the only problem is that it has over 220k miles. I really want the car and going to do a test drive tomorrow but i really want some opinions from those who own this car and if it would be the right thing to do. Thanks

It'll depend on the car, more so than the motor. If every suspension part is wore out, interior is ragged, etc., then it won't be much fun.

The motor can last a REALLY long time if well-maintained and not abused like a 200 shot or something. Just miles aren't necessarily the measure of its condition.

I don't have one of that particular car so I can't help you with specific details to look at/for.

Lots of things could be wrong at 220k miles/18 years old, anything really. Not just stuff specific to these cars. Or, it could be that most items have already been rebuilt/replaced and the car is more fresh than one might expect. You'll just have to check it out in person. As mentioned above, it will all depend on what sort of care it's received and what sort of life it's lived. The fact it's still with its original owner is a good sign though.

Personally, I wouldn't buy one with that many miles unless it was dirt cheap. However, I know a few folks who have bought them with over 200k and actually gotten pretty good deals on decent cars this way.

I would definitely talk him down a little on the price giving the mileage. I would check the normal stuff how the car shifts (a4 or m6) does the rear whine. hows the suspension feel worn out? Do a leak down test if possible and a compression test. I mean there are definitely guys on this forum if you do a search who have heads cam nitrous and over 200k on the clock just depends on how well the car was maintained.

Thanks for the help. I ended up buying it. The motor is clean, no knocking and suspension feels really smooth compared to my 94. Anyway what really sold me is the interior. Its in 10/10 condition I couldn't believe it. All I can say now is mods are coming soon lol

Amazing how cheap these cars are getting. Mine was 3k thanks to high miles and a handful of small issues.

Actually, if the price was any higher I'd be shocked if anyone would even consider this car at 220k miles. They aren't worth much at all with that kind of mileage and the original drivetrain.

^^I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't in mint condition. The engine, interior, body all 10/10 and was the original owner, kept up on all the services. It actually runs smoother than my 94 which only has 116k with an upgraded suspension. The motor sounds healthy, i've drove some ls1's that were trashed by the owners and I can feel the difference. Anyway I hope it lasts a long time(well until I get my hands on a ls3 then its game over lol)

No car can possibly be mint or "10/10" with 220k unless it's received a nut-and-bolt rotisserie restoration, but the definition of these terms seems quite subjective.

The paint sure does look nice for the mileage in that picture though. Someone obviously cared about the car during all that driving (which makes sense, since it was a 1-owner).

Mileage matters, but you're so right in pointing out that you can readily feel the difference between a quality, well-kept high mileage car and a lower mileage thrasher. If the paint is still good, the leather in good shape, no cracks in the dash or door panels, and it runs and drives as you say, it was a good buy.

My car is 161k but looks, runs, and drives like 61k. Yours may very well be the same.
