Default lifter swap from oil pan?

With the engine upside down on a engine stand can lifters be swapped out from the bottom end? Pan will be off anyway and was trying to bypass the head removal gasket cleaning process. Any info. or experiences doing it this way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

worn trays can allow lifters to rotate in the bore(especially at higher rpm's )
