Default 2000 trans am with 12bolt question

I’m looking at buying a 2000 trans am. It had a built 6.0 with procharger, 6spd and a 12 bolt. All seems to be good but I’m 5hrs away and haven’t seen it in person. The only issue the guy said is that under a hard launch or acceleration there is a popping/banging sound coming from the rear. It has no issues under normal driving conditions. There currently are not rear control arms because they didn’t get them installed after the swap. I’m wondering what this possibly could be and if installing the control arms will take car of the issue.

I think you need a specific torque arm with the 12bolt. Maybe someone can give a better answer.

Thumbs down

I would drive the 5 hrs to physically check out the vehicle, I would not purchase a vehicle sight unseen. JMHO

OPs' post mentioned control arms, 2nd post mentioned a torque arm. Those 3 items are critical to the rear end. The torque arm would keep the rear end from rotating as viewed from the side, the control arms (2) also help with rear end rotation and the rear ends' position under the car as with a panhard bar. Extremely questionable.

If the car is being run without LCA's I see that being an issue.

He mentioned that the car also has a custom 3 point subframe with rear end reinforcement

How can you even drive a car without LCA's? The panhard bar, shocks, and sway bar would be the only things holding the rear end in place. Wow.

that’s what I thought lol. Got there and everything was there but it’s actually a bad trans mount that is causing the bang/pop. You can hear it when you shift gears or under acceleration. Besides that all is good to go 👍👍

That makes a lot more sense. I replaced my trans mount on my A4 car sometime around 100k. It was literally ripped in half, so you don't have to work hard to imagine the clunking and banging I was experiencing, lol.

I was also able to verify it is a 6.0 by finding the stamp on the block. Wasn’t sure at first since the heads are 853s but was glad to see it’s actually a 6.0. Now only a 6 month wait until spring lol
