Default Engine disassemble

Can I store my block with no bottom end just the bare block for a while or is that bad for it and have my crankshaft stored in a plastic tub with a towel wrapped around in Laying on its side good or bad ?

Grease all the bores of the block, the mains and the crankshaft journals then seal them with plastic bags and you'll be good for awhile.

I would not wrap the crank in a towel. The towel can absorb moisture. Use a heavy oil and seal it in a plastic bag as well. You can then wrap it in a towel if you like for padded protection.

The crank needs to be stored up right. If you leave it on its side for too long it can start to twist.

As mentioned lube everything up. Definitely use grease if it's going to be long term storage.

I store mine with a coating of spray on white lithium grease, For me it seems like it coats more evenly and since it's a spray lube I can get it onto places that I can't easily reach to wipe grease on by hand.

I have used fluid film in the past with mixed results and disappointment. I have tried a few other products including assembly lube that didn't fare so well Long term...

I haven't tried the spray on white lithium grease as I feel it's a little on the messy side.

Currently using Crown Corrosion Suppressant 101 at the recomendation of my machinist.

It's less messy than wiping on grease because it goes on only where you want it and it's a thin even layer, It cleans up easily also.

The biggest thing with storing anything for a length time is the environment it's stored in, My garage/shop is heated in the winter and cooled in the summer and humidity is kept low so I can have bare metal sit for days to weeks with no signs of rust. If I store anything in my storage shed it has to be treated or it will show surface rust after a couple days.

Whatever your choice of oil or lube, you must have a maintenance schedule for this. If you spray it and walk away, it will likely not turn out well, unless it’s in a climate controlled environment. You need to have a set weekly schedule to lightly spray or wipe, or whatever you use. I wouldn’t wrap the crank, or any other engine part in anything. It needs to breathe to help fight off corrosion. Dust or light dirt will be attracted to the oil film and will stick, so plan on the crank being cleaned really well at a later date before use. The dirty oil won’t hurt anything, just keep applying light coats periodically. If you choose a thin spray like WD-40, plan on a daily or every other day schedule.
Most big shops have a guy who oils stuff daily, along with other tasks besides actual machining. As FastBrick mentioned, don’t lay the crank on its side. Stand it on its end, or hang it from the flywheel flange if you have the means. Extended periods of a crank laying on its side will cause it to bend or twist.

I wish someone would do a scientific test to see if they really do twist, Maybe engine masters would do it. I still store mine either supported in the box it came in or standing but......
I asked a metallurgist one time and he said why are people saying you can't? I told him what most people say is that the crank will bend over time. He asked how people say they should be stored and I told him either by standing on end or by hanging them from one end. He laughed and said if they will bend while laying on it's side then they will stretch or compress if hung or stood upright. He also said if they were made of a material that was so weak that it was prone to stretching/compressing/twisting without an external force you wouldn't want it in your engine because it would bend or break the first time you tried to start it.

Shouldn't believe everything that you read but if you're someone who's spent any time in and around machine shops you'll pick up on some things.

My engine guy says he has always stood them up because they take up less room and you can't stack them, He has no idea if laying them down damages them either.
