****, mine is pinging a little too (WOT going uphill, a/c on, 95 degrees heat).

bad news 'cause i even have HPP3's faster fan on setting, power programming off and 93 octane.

think it's carbon buildup in the upper intake.

This pinging sounds like a common problem with f bodies. I also owned two 1999 corvettes the motor never pinged at all. The vettes motor would run great no mater what the weather was. Why is there a difference???? ????
Anyways I'll try some seafoam this weekend.

I hear guys on Corvetteforum complaining of pinging and carbon buildup too though, so they aren't immune to it.

If we're talking Seafoam now, I might as well mention BG44K - best pour-in-the-tank-and-drive injector/combustion chamber cleaner around.

my car also used to ping, but its been some what off and on, i beleive its from water leaking into the knock sensors on top of the motor and its almost a clacking noise. i also beleive this to cause false knock, also have a 2000, and i know 3 other people with 2000 ls1's and they all do it as well and theres are bone stock and do it more than mine.

A real good fuel system cleaner is a product called Fuel Power, sold by a company called Lube Control. www.lubecontrol.com

Hmm
I had the dealer about two months ago run the top end cleaner in the fuel system. It didn't make a difference. Also what about getting some race gas like 100 octane. I would do this just to see if the fuel octane I'm buying is the problem.

Tried the Seafoam today. Could not tell any difference. The car is running better because its cooler outside.
Thanks again for all the info. I feel I am not the only one with this problem. I sounds normal for a ls1.

hey BT, so what does the MAFT do? does it richen up the mixture?

the guy that i bought the car from ran 87 octane for 2 years.....i was running that for the first 5 months and it didn't ping, plus i got 22mpg.

switching to 93 octane, i'm getting 18-20 mpg.....but if i change back to 87 it would ping like hell.

i'm guessing that the PCM lowered timing to adjust for the 87 and then when i went to 93, it raised the timing....so going back to 87 caused pinging.

I have had partial/WOT hot weather ping for half a year now. Tried pretty much everything suggested here except for taking off the heads and checking the motor - plugs/filters/catch cans/lower t-stat/seafoam - you name it, i've tried it. Today I am replacing fuel pump as fuel pressure was ~2-4psi lower then normal at WOT - if this does not help my detonation problem I am giving up on this "piece" of american engeneering, at least until I am ready to pull apart the engine...

Update
I put in my full exhaust plate in my borla exhaust rear y. It seems to help a little more. Also helps with the harmonic in the y pipe I think.

I also have the same pinging problem on my 99 ss. only at W/T, and I also have a A/f ratio gauge. it reads rich at W/T. Maybe carbon build up I'm guessing. Also I just hooked up the car with a 100 shot, but i dont whant to use it with the car pinging.
WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK??????.

try water

seriously its the best thing to clean carbon out of a motor with ... spray some into the engine while holding it at a fast idle ... get a good bit in there but not so much as to make it stall

when the water gets in with the combustion process it truns into hot steam and breakes the carbon loose

usually carbon build up makes the car lean cuz it acts like a sponge and soaks up the fuel which will make it ping, but then again black smoke usually means alot of unburned fuel

anyone ever heard of crushed buckwheat husk/shells through the engine to remove carbon?

My car is pinging also. what worries me more is that my car is backfiring bad when it is cold (engine temp not outside temp). i think that part of our problems are that the gas sucks nowadays. $2.10 a gallon and now we all get pinging. by the way what causes the backfires.

are you sure its a backfire and not popping that is common on these cars when they are cold?

if it backfires when cold then maybe its lean

Before I Did The Exhaust I Thought It Was Just The Popping. Now That I Have The Magnaflow It Sounds More Like A Back Fire. I Know That This Car Had A Fuel Pump Put On It Right Before I Bought It. Could It Be Going Bad Again. If Not What Do I Do Next.
