I know you dont need the long tubes. To be honest, i just prefer the styling of the 87-93 notch's to the 3rd gen's.

have u looked at getting insured through eSurance, Unirin DIrect or 21st century? These places usually cost about half of what State Farm, All-State, and Farmers would.

$2800 a year is NOT bad for a 17 year old driving an LS1 TA....im 19 and i pay more than that on my 2000 Cherokee (and i have a pretty clean record, one minor moving violation)

You can do like I did for my son he's 18, We bought a 83 camaro and dropped a 383 in it w/auto and 4.10 gears. it drives great and he pays $101.27 a month for insurance. The car looks sweet also.

Fair enough

I had a Mustang for 2 years. I didn't like it, so I'm sticking with the Camaros.

i had a 71 lemans 4-door that i dropped a built 455 into. it weighed the same as my 2nd gen firebird, had a frame under it, and was the ultimate sleeper. i paid 30-40 something a month for liability, but that was in western kansas.

there are a ton of non f-body and fox body cars out there such as caprices and cutlasses and the like that you can pick up in very nice shape for cheap and make awesome hot rods out of. they might not be as sexy or curvy or scream 'i'm fast' like a stang or camaro, but they are cheap and invisible to insurance companies, and most cops.

who is your insurance with? mine is $150 a month for full coverage, and i'm 18. as others have said, if you have to get rid of the t/a get a 5.0, they arn't a trans am but still badass and you can mod them cheaply, and with the right mods would be fast or faster then your ls1

You need to talk your mom into what i talked my parents into (I'm 19 btw). Put you as the primary driver on the cheapest car in the family. Them as primary on yours. You pay the difference on the two. My 99 through State Farm costs me $130 a month for full coverage instead of $220 with me being primary driver.

Buy a Chevelle They were never classified as sportscars When I was 16 I had a 66 Chevelle me and my dad dropped a built 454 in my car is running were that chevelle was running in high school for me, I had liability on it and it was like $50 or so a month on my 'rents insurance, my dad was the main driver according to the insurance guru's. U can buy a half-way decent 71-72 Chevelle these days for under $8k that look real good and everyone in school will be impressed with your good taste, might not be the fastest but then you'll have style in an old muscle car classic but U can always make them fast as hell with the right knowledge and $$

when i was 18 i paid like 200 in texas on a formula ws6 with 2 at-fault wrecks(everything is my fault in texas it seems, even when people run into me). now that i'm 21, i'm payin lik 130 w/~200k in coverage(its like 50/100/50). Its exactly half of my parents policy, but its still more then many people drive around with. I pay $315 on my car a month(cuz of neg equity). Not bad. If worst comes to worst I have a 1980 Datsun 280z I'll sell ya....w/a stock ls1 in it, that thing would pull somewhere in the mid-to-high 11's I think, maybe low 12's. Thats entirely stock.

No, no, no, no, NOOOOOOOOOOOoo......... NO RICER!!!

This is what you do:

You sell your car. I'll even assume you sell it for what you owe on it, with nothing left over.

Do a little research, and you can find a 3rd Gen F-body for around $3000 (perhaps less, if you don't mind it needing a paint job or some minor mechanical fixes).

Now, you ONLY get LIABILITY insurance. MAYBE comprehensive with a $1000 deductible, IF it's gonna be real cheap to add it on. You only need full coverage if you have a bank loan. Get a job and save up the money (while you're looking for a good deal on a 3rd gen), or else if you sell your car for more than you owe, use that money - then you don't need a damn bank loan.

The only time you will wish you had Collision coverage is if YOU wreck it, YOU being at fault!! I used to sell car insurance, and I can tell you that a lot of people save small fortunes in insurance premiums by self-insuring for collision damage, especially younger people (under 25).

You will still have a lot of fun with your 3rd gen, you WON'T have to be a ricer, you can still be a proud owner of one of the greatest cars GM ever made, and you WILL be able to afford it more easily. Hell, a damn ricer will cost you more than a 3rd gen will. (At least for now - since GM stopped production of the f-body, 3rd gen prices have started rising). You can even drop an LS1 engine into it down the road when you can afford it.

Good luck, and let us know how you made out.

yeah i'm 16 and i'm getting a 3rd gen and putting an LS1 in it. insurance for me is around 130 a month. (im the primary) its really not all to bad when you think about it. was super close to financing a M3 2 weeks ago and decided not to because of the 425 a month insurance.

In terms of collision i'm not gonna get it. considering that i'm not telling the insurance company that its got a modded LS1 under the hood. Plus if you look like 50% of the insurance is collision; if your paying 3500 for a car and the collision is that high you could have gotten another one in 2-3 years from the money you saved. only problem is when you get in an accident and are at fault.

You just need to shop insurance a little. You can find a better rate. put an alarm in the car, take drivers safety course, that'll help out a little on your premiums.

Now, are you saying your mom is going to name you as the primary driver, or actually move the T/A to it's own policy with you as the only driver? Big difference there...

You see, if your mom is removing the car from her policy, she will lose her multi-car discount, and you'll have trouble paying the premiums. See if you can get her to keep it on her policy with you as a secondary driver, and she collects the insurance payments from you. That way, it's cheaper for everyone.

And if you're able to work something like that out, please, please, keep the racing at the track. Your premium will sky rocket with even one speeding ticket, and you may be declaired uninsurable if you're caught street racing.

Work it out with your mom, but don't be even a day late paying her, drive safe, keep your record clean, and you should be able to afford the ins. + loan payment even with a part time gig no problem.
