The F1 had a BMW V-12 in it.
From their site:McLaren Cars commissioned the BMW S70/2 engine, designed and built specifically for the F1. This 6.1 litre, quad-cam, 48-valve V12 power unit produces no less than 627 bhp and drives through a bespoke six-speed transaxle gearbox. Radical design features include:

I have the "Driving Ambition: The Complete Inside Story of the McLaren F1" book. While pricey, it's definitely worth it for any car guy. The F1 had a "studio" model that came out in '92 for photo shoots and stuff, but the actual customer-purchasable models didn't come out until '94. And production didn't end in '96. It ended in mid-'98, and was painted that special burnt orange/copper color somewhat similar to the SOM FBodies.
