Default What is wrong ?

Sometimes, or a lot of times, when I start my car, my exhaust pops. I still have cats and yet I hear popping. Is this unburnt fuel in the exhaust ? If it is then it's probably a tuning issue but can anything mechanical cause the car to idle rough and pop ?

thanks

well if you had a carb then i'll say yes it's mechanical, but since you got fuel injection, unless somehow the cats have something to do with it, i'll say hook it up to a comp and check the tunning

This is new to me.

Besides CATs are there for emissions reasons. I'd rather leave mine on. They help cleanup the exhaust and dont rob much power, especially high-flowing ones. Plus they are required to pass inspection, especially in the strict states (MA, CA, ...)

(I know this is a hot topic so lets just agree to disagree.)

that's because you live in MA if you lived in the great state of TX it'd be a whole lot more common

It doesnt matter where I live. CATs are there to cleanup the exhaust. That is one thing I believe in "cleaner air".

I know you disagree/dont care/whatever so...

I have a 99 LS1 TA WS6, otherwise stock except for Lid and Loudmouth exhaust. No mufflers, just a resonator...my car pops when getting off the throttle and pulling out of gear coasting to a stop...not a loud pop, just a lil bit of a popping grumble...honestly, i like it...but what is causing it is unburnt fuel in the headers, becoming reignited again a few strokes later. Most likley caused from running a bit to rich i would assume. some tuning should reduce, or eliminate it...i know i need to get my car tuned

ive got LM too, and it pops the same way, eveyone else i know doesnt have LM and theirs do not pop, so i think it has something to do with the resonator, and as for the cats situation ive heard we are the only country to have emissions laws, so i really dont think the few of us cat-less cars is going to ruin all the millions of molecules of air in the world that get cleaned naturaly over time, or ruin the ozone layer which also regenerates itself over time

The USA isn't the only country with emisisons laws. We just have the strictest. Europe is tightening theirs though.

lately ive been hearing bad things about flowmaster, i always thought they were one of the best, are they seriously that bad, my friend has a 94 Z28 with edlebrock headers, no cats, and a flowmaster system, hes running 12.3's and sounds great, so it cant be that bad..... can it????

That doesnt make any sense...
Here, were have to produce cars cleaner from the factor too.

...Anyway, we are getting way off topic. The post-starter's question was about a popping sound coming from the exhaust.

Probably caused by a rich condition at startup. If you have hptuners or another scan tool you can check it. It is not that big of a deal. I would just wait until i got some more mods before a tune.
