Default UMI Short Shifter Handle

Just got it today and installed the bastard on my car...

Gotta say, this thing freakin ROCKS. Shifts are soooooo ridiculously short now, really worth it.

At only $20 bucks, no one with an M6 should be without it!!

Does this shifter let in extra noise from the transmission like some of the other short throw shifters?

A shifter it self such as a Pro 5.0 may increase road noise, mine did. But just replacing the handle will not.

In fact heres a pic of what it looks like.

All u get is a the handle, 2 bolts and 2 washers, so u can see the angle of the handle as it attached to the shifter:

Its impossible for just that handle that make any road noise, the ONLY way it could is if your boot was not installed correctly and you have alittle noise coming through there. Otherwise the handle itself has no way to increase noise.

The only way it could is the factory hanlde has a rubbler insolator in it. It would be so minimal that I can't believe anyone would complain about it.

Oh well... another happy UMI handle customer here too

thats exactly it...the rubber isolator on the factory shift stick must muffle out some of the tranny noise because when i put my lou's short stick in there was an obvious difference in the noise right away..i mean its not like its SO loud and annoys the **** out of me or anything, but they are noisier than the stock shiftsticks

i have the B&M and I just cut the stick that came with it down by 1". I think it may have messed up the geometry of it or something because it is harder to shift and feels like Im having to pull it back farther. If I had it to do over again I would have cut it 1/2". The B&M handle acyually curves toward you and then back straight up. I think its curved too much toward the driver.

Its not just noise, but vibration when you put your hand on the **** with aftermarket shifters. Stock shifters are like butter compared to mine.

Question

To install this shifter handle do we first unscrew the shifter ****, pull out the leather shifter boot, remove the two bolts, remove the old shifter handle - and then do everything again in reverse using the new shifter handle?

I checked Install University (Transmission category) and they describe removing the whole center console and screwing around with the parking brake handle. Doesn't this seem like overkill for a shifter handle swap...?

The write-up on Install University is about replacing the whole shifter. All you should have to do to change the handle on the stock shifter is take the leather boot off.

I had to take off the whole center console to get my ratchet in there to unscrew the bolts to the original handle. I didnt have a big long wrench to do it, if u do then you can use it without having to take off the console.

But yea, take off the ****, the boot, take off the original handle, then go back, put the new handle on, the bolts, the boot, and finally the ****.
