Default Whats a "valve job"?

What does it mean when someone says a set of heads needs "a valve job"? This is in reference to a set of used heads.

well it depends, if you buying used heads, an a machine shop or the owner is telling you that, it just means you need to lap the valves when you seat them. translation when you put teh valves in the head you need to grind them into the little boot they seat on to prevent backwash during operation of the vehicle.

Could vary quite a bit. Burned the valves / seats? Might be
a remove & replace of seats or, on old iron heads, having to
cut to put in seats. On the other hand I've done old SBC
rebuilds and just lapped the valves in place with the little
suction cup stick and a tube of valve grinding compound,
just work it until you have a bright ring and on to the next.
On the other other hand I've had a motor apart where the
valve seats were so recessed that a new set of junkyard
heads was the only answer.

Might ask him how bad and why, before you make the deal.
Like, lousy compression could as well be a crack as a bad
valve seat, until you scrape off the carbon who knows?
