Really, I have a freind with a 5.0 that has modded it untill he is blue in the face. He still cant beat me from a stomp/roll or whatever. Tell me exactly what you can get for 500 bucks that will make a 5.slow run faster then a LS1?

I have to say the Mustang 4.6L GT is slow. My friend has one and we raced. I was in my 2000 Firehawk (A4) and he was in his 2003 GT (M6) with headers, high flow cats, x pipe, flowmaster, MAF, throttlebody and cold air intake. Going down the road side by side about 40mph I heard him down shift and get on it. I then floored it and it was just plain silly. He didn't have a chance even with a head start. When we got back to his place a actually had to ask him if thats all it had and he said yes, I just smilled.

They still won't trap anywhere near a LS1. It might keep there from a dig, but after 3rd gear, it's over.

ramair: 2600lb raceweight? What year 5.0 is this? Does the driver weigh 90lbs or something? Is is a gutted notchback with balsa wood fenders? A cam won't do much in a 5.0 with the restrictive intake and heads...were they hogged out? What gears? Anything over 3.73 is usually a waste until you do some engine modding as the the stock 5.0 makes it power well before 6000rpm. Ben (is curious because he owns a 5.0 and LS1)

i would watch for those 5.0 while i was at hobby here in houston back in the day thier was 02 silver ws6 with heads cam and spray for the longest time no one could beat him. so this 1990 Gt 5.0 shows up on a sunday night and calls the ws6 out. the guy with ws6 says "unless you have a $700 in your pocket get the **** out of here" the guy with 5.0 reaches in his pocket and threw $700 on his hood. the ws6 says trun on your car and open your hood you cant even hear the cam, uder the hood thier was a black cobra intake with bunch of nitorus lines he is also on 16 pony wheels with et streets they line up they both purge and the 5.0 pulls the wheels about 2 feet off the ground and is gone the 5.0 went the full 1/4 the ws6 gave up at about 1/8 mile . i have it on video i will try to post it

A 5.0 weighs 3010 lbs (check the link below) Hell a civic weighs 2744 lbs without a driver. I seriously doubt you can drop over 400lbs + 200lb driver for free

Those are some CHEAP prices, 150 for a cam and gears for 100 Even if you could find them for those prices, you still wouldnt beat an ls1.

There are some really fast 5.0s. They are cheap and the 93's and earlier style are light. The only came with 2.73s. So those old Lx's (even lighter than the gt by 200 pounds) with the 5.0 with a set of heads and gear swaps will run some low 13s. I had friends back in high school that were running some low 13s and mid-high 12s with them NA only. I finished HS in '90. They are cheap now and there's still lots of aftermarket parts. You can buy the block from ford still as a factory motor or a stroked motor.

But you have to admit, an LT1 and LS1 are cheap now to buy too, hehe. I have a feeling that it's back to them old early days for gm and ford. I like those HP wars, lol.

This I have to see. Around here, the 5.0 stangs are generally fast. Granted there are some that just sound good, but if he is wearin et streets or the like, dont bet. (unless you arent stock) I have beat a few modded 5.0's in my chevelle, several put my 305 3rd gen to shame, and only raced one 4.6 stang in the WS6--I was kinda surprised at how little they get in the mirror.

I had a 96 GT before I got the Formula. I used to really be into Mustangs and I still like them; however, they just aren't as fast as an LS1. Even with some bolt-ons.

FWIW, 96-97 GT's are (over)rated at 215hp, the 98 got a slight increase in power to 225 hp.

I wish I still had half the money that I spent on my Mustang trying to make it faster. I had every bolt-on you could do and was spraying. I let my GF drive my stock Formula and I raced her with the Stang. Even spraying a 100 shot she walked away from me.

You failed to mention he's running slicks, drag suspension, every bolt-on, and 4.56's. IMO, that sucks.

Oh, and the 98 2V got a *slight* boost in power over the 96/97. Nothing that will make any difference though.

Reading these forums I have come acrossed multiple LS1's trapping 111mph with all bolt ons. Sucks to be them, but I have seen it. Hell, I have seen cam'd LS1's on this forum trapping the same mph.

12.09 is pretty quick for a street car... or it was a street car. Especially with that type of motor and it being stock.

It depends on the circumstances if a stock 98 cobra will hang with a stock LS1 F-Body. Maybe a tire might blow?

My point was that with all that work, he's only running that e/t while having a horrible trap. I'm not denying that not all LS1's can run that with bolt ons, but still, you don't have to do much work at all to a LS1 compared to all that of the N/A 4V.

For example, my 01 Z went 111.6 with a lid, filter, y pipe, catback, and predator. Hell, i'm only 3mph off with my SS, and all I have is a lid and catback.

03/04 Cobra guys are now saying the same thing about us now though
