Some of us actually prefer manual transmissions (for all occassions). I've driven manuals for years and of course my Z is a 6-speed. My old Nova was a manual. My '93 Dakota has a 5-speed manual and it was my daily driver for 10 years. When I went to replace it last year, I searched for a manual but they're hard to find in a high end package so I settled for the auto. And while autos certainly have their advantages, I still wish I had the 5-speed in my new truck.

Also, I never understood the 'it's hard to drive a manual in traffic' argument. Granted, driving a manual in traffic isn't as easy as sitting on a sofa with a bag of chips watching tv but it really isn't that hard.

I daily drive my m6 and race it too. I dont see the fun in stomping down in the gas in an auto and going fast. I love to slam the gears and chirp the tires. Get an M6

Get the M6, getting the auto was my biggest mistake ever. Unless you want to get into drag racing hard core(like running every week for points), the M6 is the way to go. With the stick, you can practice your skills in getting sideways a lot easier than in the auto.

Last time I checked both A4 and M6 require streering unless you like to hit trees, signs, buildings, ect

My personal favorite M6 vs A4 debate quote is this one:

"If you want people to think your fast then get the M6. If you want to actually be fast then get the A4."

The bottom line is the M6 is great for daily driving, road courses and pleasure riding. The A4 is great for drag racing and daily drivers that deal with heavy traffic. Both have +'s and -'s as well as both have followers and haters. I would say get the M6 unless you know your going to get heavy into quarter mile drag racing in which case I highly recommend the A4 with a 3500+ stall torque converter.

I've driven Manuals all my life, and love to row my own, but I must say that I'm really and truly happy with my A4. No problems launching, no dealing with traffic. Sure, sometimes I wish I had a manual, because I like banging gears, but overall, I think the auto was a better choice for ME

Besides, from a roll, I can still select my own. I bump the bitch down in 2nd and powershift it.

I try not to sound like a broken record... but... It's your money, get whichever makes you happier.

Go for it. Although I did shrink it, I think technically it still belongs to GM.

Lets throw another issue into this debate: the best tranny for 800+rwhp cars. I know the T56 is strong but I doubt it will hold 800+rwhp. But then again I don't know of an auto that you can just put in "D" and go that can hold that much power either. And by "hold" I mean be able to use the car as a daily driver and pound the hell out of it when you feel like it and it not break for at least a year. Any suggestions?

TH400 is known for it's ability to handle 500-600 rwhp with ease but I'm not sure about 800rwhp. It's a 3 speed automatic tranny. There is a bolt-on overdrive unit you can buy seperately for the TH400 but it's real expensive.

But 800rwhp and daily driver is an oxymoron IMO. That's just a bit too much power for the street and everyday driving. 500rwhp is another story

A4: Easier on parts, You can eat a sausage biscuit in traffic, consistent.

M6: Better gas mileage, less forgiving on parts, more forgiving for a street/strip car.

I asked the same question here:

https://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/284653-automatic-tranny-better-than-manual-help-please.html

I really like manuals but i found a REALLY good deal on an auto. Maybe im just trying to talk myself into an auto when i should really hold off for a manual. Such a big decision and im still indecisive.

Ive never owned and raced an auto on the street from a roll. Is a4 really a disadvantage to the m6? Do you drop the gear manually in the a4 or just punch it? That sounds like such a noob question but i really dont know.

Wish I had bought the M6, but the A4 is fun at the track and keeps me from f#cking up.
