Default SS Everything

Anyone catch all the SS model chevrolets at the NY auto show recently?

Heres the list:

Cobalt SS
Malibu SS
Malibu Maxx SS
Monte Carlo SS (all new)
Impala SS (all new)
Trailblazer SS (391 HP with LS2!!!!)

I might have missed one. The only one interesting to me is the Trailblazer but whatever.

You know, SS used to mean something.

Cobalt SS?? Come on!!

Even my SS isn't really "unique" the way SS used to be. In my mind, the most modern example of the SS is going to be the 94-96 Impala SS. I had a Caprice 305 V8 before I got my Camaro, so the Impala SS was a significantly different car. Other than that SS doesn't mean much any more.

So why did I spend the extra to get the SS instead of a Z? I guess because it still stirs you up a bit to see that SS on a Camaro.

When I see it on a Cobalt?

I'm still puzzled at the whole SS Malibu Maxx idea. Maybe Chevy should just do like dodge and put a damn LS2 or LS7 in every car they come out with. There were alot of SRT8s around the show too and not all of them were chargers.

Personally, the SS Means alot to me!!! But I get what everyone is saying, SS this SS that. I think that they are trying to make us forget about the real SS's, which are the almighty Camaro's, El Camino's, and Monte Carlo's!!! But Chevy will hopefully realize and all of this talk of the 5th gen, will become a reality!!!

It is getting a little ridiculous. Malibu Maxx SS that is just plain dumb. The trailblazer SS is cool if it comes with the LS2. It would be nice to see a Tahoe with a performance package but it wouldn't have to be a SS to make it cool. I want a Tahoe next year so maybe they will come out with something.

You guys are ridiculous to think SS doesn't mean anything anymore. The SS label was applied to the top of the line model - which is why they can apply the SS badge to these cars. They have bigger engines, more power, better suspension, body/wheel changes, etc. That is what Super Sport means. SS does not have to mean RWD V8 with 400hp. These smaller displacment engines are making enough power to take on their bigger 60/70's counterparts. Look at the 94-96 Impala SS compared to the 04/05. The blown 3.8 is quicker, yet it's a FWD 6.

Here is everything that has worn (and will be wearing) a SS badge...
Impala SS ~ 1961 - 1969/1994 - 1996/2004 - 2006
Nova SS ~ 1963 - 1976
Chevelle SS ~ 1964 - 1973
Camaro SS ~ 1967 - 1972/1996 - 2002
El Camino SS ~ 1968 - 1987
Monte Carlo SS ~ 1970 - 1971/1983 - 1988/2000 - 2006
C1500 454SS ~ 1990 - 1993
S10 SS ~ 1994 - 1998
Silverado SS ~ 2003 - 2005
SSR ~ 2003 - 2005
Cobalt SS ~ 2005
Mailbu SS ~ 2006
Trailblazer SS ~ 2006

it used to mean top of the line muscle car. they werent making 4 door sedans back then or compacts with higher performance 4 and 6 cylinder engines with the SS emblazoned on them.

im sorry, but the SS name is just like dodge and their new "hemi" b.s., its a marketing scheme!

SS meant top of the line, now it usually means you pay alot more for a performance increase that is marginal. I still think t'd be cool to have a garage full of **** that said SS. But the acronym SS has definitely lost some of its value over the years.

The new impala and monte carlo look pretty nice now.

Did anyone also notice that the V8 going into the Impala and Monte Carlo runs on 4 cylinders when you are crusing on the highway to conserve gas?

It's Displacment on Demand. All Gen IV engines have the bosses for this, it just won't start hitting everything until next year. The trucks and SUVs will be getting it shortly.

We don't have Displacement On Demand do we? I'm getting sick of some of these ideas to save gas mileage, and get away from the original desing of engines. I like fuel injected, and all this other stuff like Hydraulic Roller cams, MAF sensors etc. no biggie, but Drive-By-Wire (electronic Throttle Body) and Disabled cylinders COME ON!

Aslo Spy2520 you said "Maybe Chevy should just do like dodge and put a damn LS2 or LS7 in every car they come out with. " GM is planning on just that. They are putting the 4.6L Northstar, and LSX in everything now! The 08 production GTO (if it is produced and here in america) it will hae a reported 500 hp...now hmmm which GM motor is already capable of that l: Also the supposed Next Gen Camaro/Firebird will have a reported 500hp if they return

Also the DOD system and all these 5.3L motors are going into several cars, THEY ARE LOSING IT

These companies are running out of ideas because of restrictions, as well as getting lazy!

Why is everyone opposed to DOD? Maybe you should a little research on the subject before being disgruntled about it.

If anyone wants to get back on topic here are the sites, personally I don't think Colbalts or Malibus deserve the SS badge (my opinion) at least the Impala and Mont Carlo have SS history.I will have to see the Trailblazer in person, but it looks kind of cool to me.
I know there were 60's Malibu SS,but today's econo-boxes don't deserve the Malibu nameplate.

I don't think anything with front wheel drive should be called Super or Sport, let alone both!

The trailblazer doesnt look all that different than the base, but an ls2 will make most cars beautiful.

The monte carlo and impala have a history and a future, aren't theey going to rear drive with possible v8s in the next couple of years?
