Default Newb Here. Federal Emissions Warranty question.

Hi all,

I just picked up a 2000 T/A yesterday and she threw a code. Took her into Autozone to get a scan and was told that my drivers side Catalytic Converter was stopping up. Code read something like "Catalyst Bank 1 below threshold"

The question is should I have any issues with getting the CAT replaced and do they replace one or both.

Any input would be appreciated

who is going to replace it? i wanna say the dealer should do it for free, i dont remember the year/mileage limit, but you should take it to a dealer and see. do a search here, i know that has been discussed before.

they will replace whatever cat is bad. not both.

i recommend getting rid of the cats and getting an ORY, and get the rear o2's deleted.

and congrats on the new car. any info you need, do a search, and then ask questions. were here to help

If I'm not mistaken, the basic warranty on most TransAms was 3 years, 36,000 miles. So he probably wont be getting it replaced for free. I'd do what 99Formula is sayin though, just dump the cats and get a ORY, unless your state requires cats. Then grab some high flows so you can pass the sniffer.

Thinking the warranty for the cats is 8 years or 80,000 miles. Federal mandate. Just call a dealer and ask.

Thx for the replies. I did a search before I posted the thread but, couldn't get the answers to the exact questions. I did find some great ideas though. ;-)

So far, I have found that the CATs are covered regardless under 80k/8yr term which Federally mandated just as The Old Man stated. I do plan on modding her a little but, I need to work out the little bugs first and if I can get a dealership to cover some of it for free then, I will definitely go for it.

That's what I've heard too.

I've had both of my CATs replaced in the past few weeks. First the passenger went bad and they replaced it (and the O2s) then the driver went bad a week later and they replaced it too (and the O2s). So now i have 2 new CATS and at least 2 or 3 new O2s (our cars have 4 and I dont remember if they replaced all 4 or not).

Gonna have my wife drop the car off at at the new Garber center on Rte 17 tomorrow. Hopefully, the work can be done soon. I'm expecting it to run a little better as well. It seems to idle a it low at the moment. "Around 500 rpms" I expect it's one of the symptoms of my CAT issue.

they must replace your cats for free if they are causing codes per federal law and GM policy, if they don't, threaten to write to local GM representative.

I had mine replaced and they didn't say anything about a few minor mods I had at the time.
